Congrats! Do you mind sharing stats?

Congrats to those accepted! And for those not, you will find the right place for you or your kid!

So, I’m a father of a kid that is now at Bucknell. He was waitlisted, decided to go to another school that he wasn’t excited about, and then switched to Bucknell when he got off the waitlist. I’m here if anyone has questions since I was going crazy at this time last year.

Since some may wonder about his stats: 3.72UW, 3.85W gpa. Didn’t submit test scores. OK ECs (typical suburban kid). Solid essay.

He was nervous about Bucknell since he barely remembered visiting and had been focusing on bigger state schools. He loves it now and thanks us for nudging him there (and he NEVER thanks us).

Is that for a specific major?

What are your student’s favorite aspects of attending Bucknell so far? Any surprises, or aspects that they didn’t anticipate at Bucknell that might be good for an incoming student to know? Thank you and glad your S25 is happy there!

Sorry, this is long. It’s somewhat stream of consciousness. Hope it helps.

The biggest downside? The food. It’s terrible. They switched vendors last year and the new one is terrible. The administration has been receptive to complaints, but haven’t done anything. To be fair, they signed a contract and I’m not sure the food is bad enough to break the contract.

The dominance of the Greek system on social life is not exaggerated. That can be tough on the freshmen guys, epecially since the girls can go to the fraternity parties, but the guys can’t. They do have ā€œSupersā€ every Saturday that are day parties thrown by the fraternities that are open to everyone and second semester the guys can get invited out to some of the parties.

But the lack of pledging first year is also a positive. The students get to know each other outside the system first. My son is interested in a couple of the fraternities now that he would not have been if he was rushing first, or even second, semester. He also said there are plenty of kids that don’t join a fraternity/sorority and they seem fine with it and can get into parties when they know people.

Professors have been hit or miss, like any school, but I also think my son likes the professors in the classes he is more interested in (rather than the quality of the professor). But regardless, they all seem approachable and interested in teaching. That is why he decided to go to Bucknell over a bigger state U and I don’t think he regrets that.

My wife and I actually love the town of Lewisburg and my son has gone into town a lot more second semester. The downtown is right off campus and has some solid restaurants and shops (and the cool movie theater), but there are also all of the big box stores just off campus.

Hotel rooms can be very hard to get for move in weekend and parents weekend (and I’m sure for graduation). Jump on those if you can. There are some good options in Selinsgrove if you can’t get one in Lewisburg. For parents weekend we had to go to Williamsport. Not the end of the world.

Thank you so much for your reply and detailed sharing of your perspective and your student’s experiences. C25 had visited Bucknell but had a medical issue while in Lewisburg, so instead of the scheduled tour (they were able to switch to a self-guided tour day of, which was saved under their profile asā€demonstrated interestā€), they saw the WellSpan urgent care center next to the local hospital and the CVS pharmacy nearby (5 stars for both!). Glad that your student is having a great experience.
