And didn’t Steve Jobs drop out of Reed?

Doesn’t hold for Scott McNealy though.

And didn’t Steve Jobs drop out of Reed?

Doesn’t hold for Scott McNealy though.

lol sometime i think the dropouts are smarter then the people who graduate! lol still, if you drop out of harvard, you probobly have a better reason then just being lazy-you probobly are really close to inventing cold fusion.

Or you can’t fund your education (unlikely w/ the new $40k and under thing), or you fail a bunch of classes, or you plagiarize, or… the list keeps going. ;)

no, all of those are stupid excuses. i mean why would someone smart enough to get into harvard blow away such a fantastic oppertunity. i mean almost everyone who gets in is qualfied to work there, you must be really lazy to do minimal work. also, if you plagerize then you are proboly way to stupid for harvard. its likely that you can find help to pay for college if you look in the right places (talk to your fin aid advisor) besides harvards grad rate is they highest in the country (world?), so most people are competant enough to stay in school. id only drop if i had a realllly good reason (cold fusion for example ;))

No, they’re common reasons.

-People may do minimal work for a variety of reasons, such as: laziness (partying and stuff), addiction (drugs, alcohol), psychological problems (depression, mania, schizophrenia), family issues (deaths, divorce, illness), other commitments (varsity sports, music, editor), etc.

-Plagarism is most often accidental–not a deliberate act of stupidity.

-$33,000 a year is not simple to get. It is possible to pay your way through Harvard with financial aid, a good job, and hard work, but it is by no means an easy task.

Don’t be so pretentious.

shark_bite, learn to spell geeeeeez

If i ever get into harvard, which i doubt i will, i’ll make sure not to blow it on reasons like those. Its easy to avoid doing most of those problems. Dont party every weekend. If it’s affecting your grades, then it’s to much. Don’t drink or do drugs. It’s your choice to do it or not. I can see if you are addicted then you have little choice, but check into a health facility. If you do have a psyhological or medical problem, its best to do what you can. This is one of the few good reasons to drop out. If there is family issue, then it is also a good reason, but you should try not to let it run your life. If your other commitments are affecting your number one priority (school I’d assume) then I recommend slowing down with them.

Also, how is word per word plagarism accidental? If you go to a book and steal an author’s idea as your own, then it is an act of stupidity. What else can I say? Is one good great grade worth getting kicked out of college? If it is accidental, talk to your professors etc. and let them know. Hopefully they won’t kick you out. (Still, they likely will-good luck if you truely didn’t do anything wrong)

Also, If money is a problem (it almost always is) then do your best. Financial Aid at schools like Harvard and Princeton is quite good (at least they say it is) You can get a part time job too. If you are planning on going into buisness school sometimes it can provide great job experience at can help you get in. (2 birds with one stone) There are scholarships out there and hopfully you can get one to help you out. This is the best reason for dropping out of school (if there is a “best” reason) Btw: I didn’t mean to make it sound like getting money would be easy, but if you have the drive and desire to graduate from college, you can do it. If the worst comes to worst and you can’t afford it, I’d reccomend transfering to a cheaper college. You don’t have to go to the most expensive school in the country for a fantastic education. Good luck if you can’t afford college. I’m just a junior and I havn’t even thought about money yet, I’m just worried about getting in, the paying for it part will come later. (Well, I am doing some small things to help myself out-Job etc.)

Still, it’s really hard to fail out. Normally, if you fail a bunch of classes or get in serious trouble, they make you take some time off and then you come back, and most people do decide to come back. It’s very rare that they’ll expell you; you generally have to be convicted of a serious crime (rape, embezzlement) for that to be the case. I know people who have failed classes, but the only person I know of in my time at Harvard who actually dropped out was Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of the Facebook.

I was simply pointing out the errors in your judgement. You basically just said that all of the reasons I listed are, at times, appropriate. Some kids who drop out of college do not have “good” reasons, but many other students have acceptable reasons for leaving school.

I know one or two kids who were expelled or lost their scholarships because of accidental plagarism. For example, one kid had in MLA style parentheses next to a quote (with quotation marks and everything) a note reminding himself to look up the source from a particular book. He forgot to go back and write it the citation, so he failed the class and lost his scholarship. It happens.

Ouch! That would be the worst! If you know him/her, let um know they have my sympathy. (Of course I doubt they want to talk about it anymore)

Something like that happened to me in frosh year (I forgot name on major project, got a C for quarter and with A from other quarter made a B for sem)

Still, I doubt that happens all that often. I’d wager that most people who get caught for cheating, really did cheat. Still that is quite sad and can happen to anyone.

Btw: I really only started talking this as a joke saying that college dropouts from top colleges can be smarter then the people who graduate (bill gates) Sorry for hijacking this thread from…wait a sec this was my thread! I just hijacked my own thread. Hmmmm. Oh well. lol.
