Buying a suit

^That’s sort of what I figure. Not to mention the fun of going to a tailor, which I don’t anticipate he’d be able to afford any time soon in the US. He’s not headed for investment banking!

I agree with edad on the color (black or navy blue) and disagree with toblin about pleats and wool blend-- he definitely doesn’t want pleats and a wool blend will not give the same nice drape and wearability as an all wool suit. It does have to be a harder finish worsted wool, however, and not wool flannel. Also make sure they use a Bemberg Rayon lining on the coat that is not as susceptible to shrinkage when dry cleaned, even if you have to pay a little extra.

Let him get the suit made. It’s not more pricey than a cheap one on sale at Kohls. The worst that can happen is it won’t last as long as he would like.

DD has had several garments made in Africa and says they fit her BETTER than anything she has ever bought in a store. The Asian tailors who have made and altered things for members of our family have been outstanding and the clothes were excellent and fit well (we have thin guys in the family…see other thread).

My son would be THRILLED to even be able to try this.

I would personally vote for no cuff and pleats, but that is me. Cuffs go in and out of style. Cuffs look better on tall guys, and the weight helps with a proper drape. Pleats help out the non-slender and let you sit down comfortably.

I see that I recommended grey previously. I agree that navy would be a better choice for a first suit, or maybe a dark charcoal gray also. I personally don’t care for black suits, unless you already have several and just want a black suit.

One thing that always strikes me about the men’s fashion magazines is that invariably the suits on the young men look too tight (to me). I personally do not like that look, but apparently others do.

ah but if you’re a musician…you would be thrilled to have a nice black suit!!

I also noticed that mens fashion magazines (GQ) dress the models in incredibly small suits, almost Pee Wee Herman like.

Perhaps I’m just not “high fashion” enough, but if a guy showed up to a meeting wearing one of these suits we’d all snicker under our breath.

However, I do like a nice fitted look. I don’t like the modern boxy suits that seem to be sold in most stores. They are over-sized and sloppy looking.

I don’t care to much for solid black suits. I have one but avoid wearing it.

I second Hunt’s suggestion for a tuxedo.

My H did that in college – some fraternity brother’s father was in the men’s suit business – and got fitted with a tux. He’s worn it to formals, to black-tie weddings, to our own wedding and my sister’s wedding. A classic tuxedo never goes out of style. It was a sound investment.

For a regular suit, I would say a navy or very dark charcoal gray though, not black. Not a fan of all-black suits on men.

Tuxedo for a senior in hs is worth it if
he is in a Wind Ensemble-3 concerts
date for a junior to her junior prom-1 wear
date for senior prom-1 wear
2 weddings- 2 wearings
skit dressed as the maitre’d-1 wearing
confidence of having a well tailored tux at your disposal 24/7-priceless.
Black suit
3 funerals-3 wearings
2 weddings-2 wearings
dance-1 wearing
4 internship interviews-4 wearings
out for dinner in NYC-3 wearings
confidence knowing you are well dressed for any occasion, any time, any place-priceless

Well he got the suit. I think it’s going to be gray with a lighter gray pinstripe. It’s going to end up costing a bit more than the original quote. Fancy that! I think he’ll wear it.

Balto I’m impressed with how much use your son has gotten out of his tux. Son was in orchestra and needed black pants and a white shirt, but hasn’t needed a tux yet. (Didn’t go to prom.)

My DS has had 2 suits custom made for him in Saudi Arabia (where he is working). The tailor is Indian. ~$120 each. He was home for the holidays, and he brought the suits with him. They are very well made and fit him perfectly. DS is 5’7", ~130#, so finding a suit that fits him well has been a challenge. His previous best-fitting suit came from Napoleon’s Tailor (mentioned in another thread), but the new suits fit even better.

DS has also had the Indian tailor make him some custom made shirts - ~$20 each. They, too, are very nice.

I’m going to suggest to DS that he get a tuxedo made. Great suggestion, Hunt!
