Buying the Next House

mathmom, what brand??

It’s a Whirlpooll Duet Sport. The washer is a Kenmore. The old dryer took 45 minutes, the new one twice as long.

Is it a HE dryer, mathmom? My new HE washer/dryer set take forever. Seems even longer when on the energy-saving setting!

It seems to me that an energy-efficient setting for a clothes dryer is an oxymoron. You want a lot of energy to dry clothes; that way, it’s done faster.

We are thinking of buying my S and Dil an stackable washer/dryer for the house they are in the long process of buying. Any suggestions on what to consider? Brands that you have good or bad experiences with? We would like as large a capacity as possible as there is a baby on the way and that will mean lots of laundry.

lots of previous discussions on this, boysx3 and congrats on impending grandparenthood [College Confidential Site Search Results - College Confidential](http://www.collegeconfidential.com/search_results.htm?q=stackable+washer+dryer&userInput=&sitesearch=collegeconfidential.com&cx=013579521852154800353%3Avvp1k6kluvq&cof=FORID%3A9)

I need to buy a bench for my vanity and am not having any luck. We went around and hit all the home goods types of stores we could find, and we poked around a few actual furniture stores while we were looking for our table, but we didn’t see anything. I was thinking oil rubbed bronze to match my fixtures, with beige or cream seat would go nicely. Any ideas where I should look? It doesn’t look these things are sold anywhere, and if they are it is part of a set. The vanity is built into the bathroom counter, so I just need the bench!

We got the table yesterday and realized the light fixture for the eating area is in entirely the wrong spot, so now we are learning all about patching drywall. Dad is an electric wiz and BF is not far behind him, they will have no problem with that aspect of things, but Dad claims he sucks at drywall and BF has never tried. We have a similar scenario going on in the living room, they have one random recessed light in a completely nonsense spot that needs to be removed and patched before we put in the real recessed lighting. Trying to find a drywall guy to consult about that and the ugly textured ceiling… dad’s idea was to nail a fresh sheet of drywall right over it and forget about it, but even he admits that might be a stupid idea.

ETA: We have maytag washer and dryer and both are done in about 30 minutes, and always at the same time. I love it, because our washer/dryer at the apartment always finished 15 minutes apart and it made cycling loads a lot less convenient than it is now.

I got what was recommended, and maybe it does use less energy, but I’m not convinced. In any event it takes so much longer to do the laundry than it used to. Thank heavens the boys aren’t usually home any more.

That’s actually pretty standard practice if the plaster is in pretty good shape and just ugly. That’s what we did in our living room and dining room this spring. In the front hall which was somewhat less textured, the workers skim coated over it. Looks good too.

^^^And when they are, they should be doing their own laundry!!

Ours isn’t textured very much, it looks like they just sponged on some sort of texturing stuff every few inches apart over a flat ceiling. It’s very slight, but very busy looking. I really don’t like texturing anyway, but in this case somehow we ended up with a yellowish brown crosshatch pattern on the ceiling that runs between all the spots that have texture. I’m not sure what happened, we were wondering if maybe the previous owners were smokers but we haven’t seen any other evidence of that. That’s why it’s the UGLY textured ceiling and not just the textured ceiling. :stuck_out_tongue: I want a fresh white clean slate.

boysx3, congratulations on becoming a grandma. I am very much looking forward to that event in my life – but I also want my sons to wait a while. Like, until they’re married.

jym–thanks for the link! And thanks for the congrats! we are very, very excited. Pathetically excited !!!

VeryHappy, our son will have been married almost 4 years when the baby arrives—and they were together before their wedding for longer than that. So we have been waiting a long, long time.

Now if the saga with their house would just get to its happy ending already…

House closing has moved up a week to next Tuesday! Christmas lights are scheduled to be up before Thanksgiving. We are ready to go!

Ema, it depends on how ugly. We had brown patches on our from past bathroom pipe issues. Much as I like my bathroom renovation, I think my favorite part of the project is that I can now lie on my living room couch and look up at a beautiful ceiling. It sounds ridiculous, but I hadn’t realized how much it annoyed me! We got a better looking crown molding while we were at it. I thought DH would kill me as we spent a full week without a living room or dining room. Basically the attic and the kitchen were the only habitable rooms for a while there.

I am now living with blue painter’s tape on my kitchen floor, to see how I like the island in that spot. Kinda hard to really visualize it, since a wall will also be coming down. But it certainly helps.

The tape is a good idea, VH. It will give you an idea of the traffic flow, and whether you can open your appliances comfortably. When H and I redid the kitchen in our previous house, we actually put big moving boxes where our island was going to be so we could get a sense of the bulk.

I hope you will let us see pictures after you have done all your work!

VH, I’ve got two Elfa wire shelving units to see how I like a penninsula, I thought it might annoy me, but it seems to be working very well, despite being too low right now. I still have to sit down with DH and decide what our budget should be, since that will determine whether I can move basement stairs and/or extend beyond the existing foundations and/or give ourselves a master bath.

mathmom, moving basement stairs and extending beyond the existing foundations sounds pretty darn scary to me – AKA expensive and disrupting. Can’t you just buy smaller furniture?
