Cal States vs. UCs

If that were my kid, the easy answer would be community college to EARN the right to transfer. (Yeah, I know, the horrors of attending a juco from a private school.)

fwiw: plenty of grade inflation is the bottom half GPA of your HS is 3.2…actaully, like a lot of private schools, A’s may be hard, but it probably just doesn’t give out many C’s. (The old-fashioned, ‘gentelemen’s B-’, just like the Ivies.)

@bluebayou,
My H and I are seriously considering a community college. We couldn’t mention this to the HS GC…they would seriously freak out barring some sort of major health issue or other major issue and they might not advocate for him. We have set up minimum GPAs during Sr yr in order for him to earn the right to go to 4 year college. And yes, he has earned 1 gentleman’s B-. DS argument is that many of his classmates do worse that he does, but they all get to go to 4 year private colleges. We say that we are happy to pay for 4 years of college…when he is mature enough to take it seriously.

@ucbalumnus,
Thanks for the link to the % living on campus.

Thanks for the link to the Gen Eds. It’s funny to look at the easy math gen ed classes after a kid has taken AP Calc BC in HS. Does one take a stats or maybe opt out of the math gen ed?

Mathematical Concepts (B4)
Mathematical concepts courses enable students to use numerical and graphical data in personal and professional judgments and in coping with public issues. You must satisfy the Entry Level Mathematics requirement prior to enrollment in one course from the following:
HS 067 Introductory Health Statistics
MATH 008 College Algebra
MATH 010 Mathematics for General Education
MATH 012 Number Systems
MATH 019 Precalculus
PHIL 009 Math & Logic for General Education
SOCI/SOCS 015 Statistical Applications in the Social Sciences
STAT 095 Elementary Statistics
UNVS 015C Statway C: Statistics-Concepts & Methods
UNVS 016C Statway C: Statistics-Concepts & Methods

Note that those who take a more advanced math course are exempt. Probably AP credit will do so also.

Of course, even many highly selective schools have “easy” GE courses, so if you want to avoid him taking such GE courses, then you may have to check GE requirements carefully.
