Calculating GPA for UNC?

When UNC reports average incoming GPA on the common data set they use the scale used by NC public high schools. There is no “UNC scale.”

That being said NC public schools grade on this scale: 93-100= A, 85-92=B, 77-84=C, 70-76=D, <70=F.

NC has an augmented and a standard scale, the different counties are at their discretion on which one to use, so to get a rough idea of where your GPA stands in comparison to everyone else, use 93+=6.0/5.0/4.0, and don’t worry about +/-.

Note that you should not report your self-calculated NCWise GPA on the application. They will see the GPA your school gives, and your class rank, but more importantly they will see your individual classes, and make the determination to admit based on the rigor and the grades here.

Calculating your GPA on this scale will give you an idea of where you stand in comparison to everyone else. The average incoming GPA at UNC is 4.47 (if you are in-state, you can get in with less, if you are OOS, aim to have 4.6+)

Also, in all honesty, GPA is only as important as it affects class rank, which is much more important. They will see your individual grades, of which GPA is just a nice compressed version.
