Although it looks like a lot of money, I agree with Consolation: $53 is a good price for a place setting and well within what people budget for a wedding present.

BBB has a 4 person set for $99 (just in one color - silver).

The casual dishes get replaced every 7-10 years. The formal china is forever. We didn’t get all of our wedding china, but we got enough to use. Twenty years later, I still don’t have it all (though I’m now starting to collect pieces/sets from older relatives downsizing. It’s all beautiful and fun to have the family history.)

There is a compote in Audun on the Goodwill auction site, current bid is $24.00. It ends in 4 hours!

I just clicked on your “Like” and “Helpful”, ECmother.

So pretty!

Don’t even think about it. This one is going to be mine. [-X

Go for it, toledo! Mr B would kill me if I got another collection of dishes started…

I didn’t know Goodwill had an auction site. Interesting.

Yeah, really, that was probably the LAST thing I needed to know! :)

I called the Fort Wayne Goodwill store that had this china piece. They told me they ship over 100 boxes daily. What an operation!

Thanks to ECmother, I’m now the proud owner of the compote.

toledo, congratulations!!! I’m sure you needed it desperately and that it now solves an urgent problem in your household!

I am now “addicted” to the Goodwill online site!

I am not a china expert, but there are places that sell seconds. My aunt got me a couple of pieces of Denby dishes that were seconds and nobody can see any problem with them.

@1214mom, what are these places??

Sorry I didn’t see this sooner. If you type Denby seconds into your browser the company will come up. It’s called shephills pottery or something close to that. A friend also ordered there with no problem. If you sign up on the Denby USA site they have sales often also. Most I can recall seeing is 50% off retail price. I love my Denby dishes and they’ve held up very well (I’ve only had them a year but we use them every day).

I ended up registering for the Lenox Opal Innocence Carved after all. With the matching flatware… the flatware was expensive but if I get ONE set I can return it and buy two sets of service for 8 each in my second choice instead so I’m not too worried about that. I was worried about the Lenox dishes at Macys because it was $100 a place setting, but at BBB it was $70 and you get the 20% coupon, too, so it is still on the pricier end but not outside the realm of reason. I might end up with no dishes. But I looked everywhere and really didn’t find anything else I liked enough to bother with. I figure if I can at least get 4 place settings it will be enough for normal daily use and I can slowly add more myself over time… I probably will never get this as a gift again after the wedding but at $70 (plus maybe 20% off) I can fill it in myself over the years as needed-- and maybe I can find it cheaper elsewhere. And I can dress these up or down, which is perfect and then I will only need one set for now.

All that said, I am never setting foot in a BBB again. I was there over 4 hours, how is that even possible? But I got a pretty good spread of different things at different price points, so there should be something for everyone and I should never ever have to go back.

Ema, you might want to spread the word that Overstock carries it, too… $59.45 a setting. Very nice and smart choice! It can be used for both everyday and fancy dining.

^^^You might be pleasantly surprised at how many place settings you will receive! My D got 4 altogether and used cash gifts to buy four more. I think it’s a nice wedding gift – I always try to buy a place setting when I’m invited to a wedding.

Ema, Dillard’s has a 12 piece set (4 place settings) for $180. That’s their regular price. With all the great shoppers on this board, we’ll find you a great deal. That’s a good choice for a starter set because you can do so much with table linens.

Ooh, good to know! That helps a lot, especially that Dillard’s deal! That is a really good price. The versatility of this pattern was part of what I liked about it, it’s casual but still very elegant.
