Caltech basketball now in LA Times

Basketball at tech is fun, but exhausting. It sounds like it’s more demanding than most of the other sports because of the teamwork required and shallow pool of talent. Other sports can get away with 50% attendance. When you have a team of 15 players, you need every one there just to scrimmage.

Practices appear to be maybe 4-6 days/week for 2.5+ hours (there are probably NCAA restrictions once the season kicks in), right before dinner in the Houses [typical for Tech life…]

Comparing notables is sure to favor the larger, “Asian Parents’ Favorites”, but as a Techer on the path to being a professor, I meet alums everywhere I go. Caltech is where serious math and science researchers grow up and are trained, and I certainly feel the respect I get was well earned.

More on sports: it’s incredibly open. Other Universities’ intramurals are our Interhouse or even intercollegiate teams. Because of the large participation rate, it’s more fun for everyone, and helps to break up the routine.

As for the basketball team, you heard it here first: 2/20/06 - Caltech (W) vs Whittier
