Kind of sucks after getting deferred from Harvard too. I think my essays weren’t stem heavy bc I honestly didn’t have much stem stuff to talk about experience wise and my personal statement was about something more pol sci related. It kind of sucks after grinding hard for four years and getting rejected after everyone you knows tells you’re a shoe in for every school (I know this isn’t true lol but people still say it). Hoping for better luck with ivies.
Good luck. And even if it’s not the ivys, you will be just fine.
Heard Caltech only accepted 230 people. That’s smaller size than many elementary schools.
It was 412 last year, because not every accepted student commits (yield is roughly 2/3) and 270 students were accepted last year. Roughly half are admitted REA, so there probably was about 200-250 students admitted during RD this year.
Sorry to hear that. You may be right. My son adamantly doesn’t want me to disclose his stats. However, I think it’s safe to say that he went as technical as he could in the essays, especially knowing that there would not be an interview. The good news is that no other college in the US seems to ask for this, and your stats are clearly very strong. Good luck for the rest of RD.
They overenrolled last year, and there has been a housing crunch on campus. There was a rumor on reddit that they would make fewer offers this year and fill out any shortage from the waitlist. I don’t know if it’s true, but it wouldn’t surprise me.
Sorry to hear that! good luck on the rest RDs! I’m sure you’re gonna end up where you belong
May I ask what other colleges you applied to and their decissions till now? Bcz some UCs have already came out…
And if they did she wouldn’t be allowed to apply to Caltech.
Accepted GT, UIUC, CU rejected UT, deferred UMich and USC
Accepted UIUC for CS is very difficult, especially if you are oos. They have a great program.
Yea UIUC and GT are my top choices both great schools, just my school sends a lot of kids to ivies and they’re unmatched in my opinion. Also got into UIUC for CS + econ
Congrats on your acceptances so far! Have you also applied to mit? Cause it seems they accept lots of olympiad kids as you are!
Yes, not holding out too much hope lol
Still, CS + Econ at UIUC is a powerful combo. And GT is fantastic, too. I understand the lure of the Ivies (although, are the kids getting in from your school unhooked?), but from a recruitment standpoint businesses will highly value a CS+ degree from UIUC or GT imho.
This was from about 2014, but there’s a YT video from Sloan featuring the MIT Director of Admissions, and she basically said that there’s actually not much cross-admissions between Caltech and MIT. Getting accepted/rejected from one is not a good indication of how you’ll do at the other.
Sadly a lot of people ignore that, especially internationally. I think it is because they don’t really have the REA concept in other countries so it is understandably confusing.
I think the thread is drifting off topic.
Kiddo, you have a bright future ahead of you. Sometimes unanswered prayers are the best. I am proud of you for all you have accomplished.
Thanks, have some good options and hoping for some more!
