Can I Be Rachel Ray in the dorms?

Oh ok. I didn’t know. Neither of my kids drinks tea or coffee (where did they come from?) so it was never something we looked into as far as dorms. My kettle is my most used appliance. I’m English. Lots of tea. talking about which…

Thanks for pointing out how important it is to be considerate regarding odors. Last summer, I lived in a dorm and some of the kids did make rice, popcorn, noodles, and such in their rooms. One girl from Hawaii made rice with fish every day. I don’t think the odors were too bad - - I could understand not to make aromatic dishes, frozen meals or otherwise. I’ll be aware of this now.

I don’t have a special dietary requirement but I am watching what I eat closely. I have 10 meals a week in the dining hall. That leaves some room for other options, including a bit of cooking.

I don’t want to bring too many things along, so what is best? A pyrex measuring cup (2 cup size) for boiling water? A rice cooker bowl for the microwave? A popcorn popper bowl?

Keep in mind that will little refrigeration etc. you will be limited mostly to stuff like you mentioned - noodles, rice, popcorn - not a great diet if you are “watching”. Also, don’t forget - the cafeteria is a place of socialization - while you hope the food will be good (!) it’s a great place to catch up with your friends mid-day/dinner time.

Also, are you home this summer? You might want to “test run” some of your desired foods to see how they turn out in the microwave and see what kinds of kitchen items are actually needed…

You also have to consider ROACHES when you make food in the dorms!!! Here’s a tip for you…make sure to throw away all food related items in the BATHROOM garbage, not in the garbage can in your bedroom. Most dorms have cleaning people who come in everyday (or other day) to clean the bathrooms and empty the garbage. Even a tiny spill in your bedrooms garbage can will attract bugs. Sometime, those bathrooms are the cleanest places in the hall!!!
