Can someone explain "Occupy Wall Street"

I wonder too. I have seen in the last two-ish years a lot of people who went to good colleges and law schools who are now working as benefitless temps for very little money and drowning in debt. They thought they did everything right, but I kind of think that if you are earning $15 per hour without benefits and have $200k in debt you just might be poor.

zoosermom…that’s not a good story…

zoos–

I actually saw an attorney interviewed who is down there. He is with his wife, also an attorney, and thier baby, and they are there because they don’t have medical benfits and are trying to get by on temp type law assignments.

Too many lawyers in USA, what do you expect?

By moving manufaturing outsde of USA, we should not think that service economy will provide better jobs for youngesters. We can not comepete with products, made someplace else, that are cheaper.

If wall street keep going down there will be more trouble for people for legal professional people who serve in wall street, Too many law school in the coutntry and on top of it very few bright people want to pursue career in math and science.

I’m not making that up. I swear I’m not.

I would like to clarify something about the protests. I’m fine with the act of protesting, I’m fine with the choice of people to make their voices heard. I’ve had no problem with this particular protest until they decided to take over the Brooklyn Bridge. I just find it outrageous and unacceptable that they chose to hold over a hundred people hostage for three hours, to make it difficult/impossible for other people to get around in their own city. It’s not ok to disregard others and their safety. It’s just not ok. We have plenty of protests here that are listened to and taken seriously, but they don’t generally abuse innocent people in the process.

Maybe manufacturing has been an essential job creator in the US only because there are too many uneducated people who can’t contribute to the service economy. The problem might be education. We should move forwards, not backwards. There’s nothing wrong with one country producing physical things, and another producing services. But there is a problem when one country is producing physical things and the other country can’t fully produce services (producing services requires higher education).

Zoosermom…I know you aren’t making your story up.

to have that kind of debt wrapped around your neck…it is suffocating…

one person’s take…

The protesters’ demands: (What are your thoughts?)

[Proposed List Of Demands For Occupy Wall St Movement! | OccupyWallSt.org Forum](http://occupywallst.org/forum/proposed-list-of-demands-for-occupy-wall-st-moveme/)

LOL! Those demands are absolute lunacy.

Not too many…actually…

I just wanted to get rid of the Bush tax cuts …:)

But now…maybe…pigs get slaughtered…

We just had to have a 15% captial gains tax rate…

We just had to let our financial firms leverage over 30 to 1.

We just had to allow unlimited off exchange derivatives…

f>>>>>>> pigs.

in re: post 334 “This whole notion that corporations are evil and just trying to cut labor costs to make more money is ridiculously naive. It’s all about the stock price. And those driving the stock price are the stock holders – you.”

Just saw the opera Candide in which Dr. Pangloss made the argument that everything that happens is just fine becasue this is the best of all possible worlds.

What is “ridiculously naive” is to pretend that all companies inevitably race only to the bottom line and that other things - like employee benefits, health care, environmental stewardship and the like - are not taken into account. Example: both Walmart and Costco make good money, and (last time I checked) one offers its part-time employees much better health care coverage than the other.

We make choices choices choices all the time.

in re: #345 . . z-mom, are you saying that peaceful protests that inconvenince others for a while are unacceptable for whatever reason? I asssume you were OK with the Arab Spring protests . . .

Are you prepared to walk around Manhattan with no shirt on in support of that goal? Because if you are, I will follow you around with a camera.
