Can you beat this?! Mother throws a party after another kid gets a B

I remember walking down the high school hallway in 1976 with a friend at the end of our senior year. She turned to me and said, “Hey! Let’s go and see what our GPA’s are!” (This was the first time we actually were interested in our GPA’s.) Turned out she was the valedictorian and I wasn’t far behind! We then went to track practice. Oh, those were the days!

Stop the madness! Everybody turns out! There is more than enough fame and fortune for all of us.

AHS - What a great story! Yes…those were the days

Did you even remember to mention it to your parents? Or did they find out when they read the program at graduation?

I remember graduating 3rd in my class and being relieved because only Sal and Val had to give speeches. At that time I was deathly afraid of public speaking.

It was enough for me that I was the best piano player in the class. :)

No, I didn’t tell my parents. I wasn’t giving a speech so it didn’t matter. I was one of five children, there were enough other things going on during that time. Graduation was a low-key affair, with a homemade cake and a few neighbors over for coffee.

One-upmanship is a game that many now like to play. I am all for every person becoming self-actualized; just don’t bludgeon your “opponent”. Students don’t believe me when I tell them that decades from now, you will be happy to see former classmates you didn’t like all that much and be pleased to see that they are still alive!

Those were the days…I remember not knowing that I was in the top 10 graduates until the senior awards ceremony, taking the SAT only once, and applying to only one college.

Haha, I’m happy that I’m rank 4 instead of being Val., because I don’t want to speak! :)

It’s crazy how people don’t realize how their actions could hurt other people’s feelings. If I was your son, I would try to make light of the situation and thank everyone for coming to my party ;D

I pulled out an old box to show DS my and DH’s year books this summer. I found my hs graduation program in it. For the first time in my life I realized I was in the top 5% of my class. It is sooo different now!

audiophile- Just found out yesterday that the student that was competing with my DS, his mom is on the school board too. LOL!!!

I still doubt it’s true - or at least there is a very good chance it is not. Generally, when you start a sentence with “I heard…” there is a much better chance of it not being true. Didn’t people play the game “gossip” as a kid?

Meh… Free food.

So she had a party because her kid is going to be valedictorian?

What’s so bad about that? I admit a public party announcing that would be kinda weird but… I must be missing something here.
