<p>JHS, just wondering - what was wrong with Wallace Stevens? I don’t remember ever reading anything particular scandalous about him. Certainly nothing to put him on the level with T.S. Eliot.</p>
<p>And yeah, I’ve read Wagner’s the Jew in Music. Its pretty disgusting stuff, and I’m someone who can shrug off a certain amount of anti-semitism as a product of its time.</p>
<p>I don’t think there was anything particularly scandalous about Stevens, but he had a fairly terrible relationship with his wife and children, and was not pleasant to deal with. Apropos of Stevens, one of my teachers (who had known him, and was pretty much THE Stevens expert and proponent) commented, “I’m not sure that being a great poet is compatible with being a great husband.”</p>
