Canada Goose or not?

I’ll bet not coveralls!

You might be surprised among the crunchy, preppy crowd.

I think CG’s time as the cool brand has passed. For high end super warm coats take a look at Moose Knuckles and Mackage. They are more subtle and are considered the new “in” coats.

They all look pretty much the same to me. Just a slight variation on a theme.

I refuse to buy anything with the name Moose Knuckles. But, I’m certainly not their targeted audience with that branding.

Four years ago my daughter requested a CG as a combined birthday and Christmas present. Since she was going to school in Maine I acquiesced, but I couldn’t see spending the money for myself so I went to REI and bought a top of the line Columbia in a matching fashion to the CG.

Four years later the faux fur on my coat looked like a dead animal while hers was still fluffy and beautiful, and I found myself borrowing her coat all through her Christmas break because the CG was appreciably warmer and better fitting than the Columbia.

Nothing wrong with the Columbia. It’s a good jacket and I’m still wearing it, but there is a difference.

Snow Peak is the current prestige brand. Very high quality Japanese cult brand. Unlabeled which is the ultimate in reverse snobbishness. Unlike the gaudy red patch on the CG (which you can buy for $3 on eBay to add to any jacket). Frankly, a very warm and comfortable jacket. Plus you can avoid the CG store lines and getting mugged for the jacket! ?

I just checked out the Snow Peak website. They may be a prestige brand (I don’t have any idea about that) but I wouldn’t buy one. AFAICT they only have two models with hoods and both seem to be in a boxy gender-neutral cut. I can’t imagine they’re flattering on women.

Nah. it’s jmo, but i don’t see it. when was it ever a norm for kids to wear $1,000 coats? nothing wrong with being rich. nothing wrong with parents sending kids on ski trips. But like a Gucci diaper cover, some clothing items venture into the territory of “flexing for flexing:s sake.” there must be better or more interesting ways for kids to feel good about the clothes they put on their backs. once again, it’s jmo.

Yes, the fits aren’t flattering. That’s the style among many trend setters in NYC.

But, it’s has a following now and is a cult insiders brand. The hip young crowd, which is the same that embraced Carhut etc before.

Here’s a write up. (and the Pabst Blue Ribbon in cans is ironic as that is a fashion and hipster brand for the soho and Williamsburg fashionable crowd)

As for CG, it’s more of a mass market luxury brand, and hence not viewed with status by the NYC urban fashion crowd. It’s funny that if a brand tries too hard it loses its authenticity. They need to be ironic! The line for CG outside their SOHO store is primarily Chinese tourists, according to the doorman there. That may be as there are only a few stores in China. Whenever I walk by though, its a line of like 10 people. New Yorker’s won’t wait in lines like this unless its great pizza!

I do understand though that if it is warm, high quality and you like the fit they do seem like a good jacket.

Just to finish the thought. Look at the difference in the down used by each for their Parkas.

Canadian goose is considered better than duck down (and is much more expensive) for several reasons. Another factor is loft, the more it is the warmer the jacket will be for the same ounces of down and the more compressible it will be. The final factor is how many ounces of down are ion the jacket, but oddly enough that isn’t given by either manufacturer.

Snow Peak for example on their parka (which retails for around $600) is:

Materials Shell: 96% Polyester, 4% Aramid (DWR + AC Coating). Filling: Minimum 90% White Goose Down (800FP). Lining: 100% Polyester. Japan Fabric.

So it’s 800 fill goose down. They do have their cheaper jacket at half the price with duck down.

Canadian Goose for their expedition parka (which was over $1,000):

fill 625 Fill Power White Duck North American Down,

So it’s duck down, not canadian goose (ironic given the name), comes from North American ducks, which are considered lower quality - true!, and has substantially less loft.

550-750 fill is considered Very Good
750-900 fill is considered Excellent

https://www.mountainwarehouse.com/expert-advice/down-jacket-guide

So you can quickly see the quality differences inside - and this is also true when compared with the best down jackets out there by North Face, which are goose down and various models between 550 and 900 loft.

Consequently, Canadian Goose is a great marketing brand on a hot roll right now, but it’s not because its the best or the warmest jacket, especially given the price.

Snow Peak is a brand that’s been around for a long time. Some of my favorite backpacking camp items are theirs. Extremely light, durable, and very cleverly designed. Didn’t realize they now had clothing. Thank you CC community for always being enlightening!

These are really helpful suggestions for those not wanting to go the CG way. Thank you.
