Canker sores/Cold sores

@collage1, mine is the brand name and what Ignatius wrote is the generic. It’s the same thing.
I started using it when there was no generic so I’ve called it Kenalog ever since. You can use it after the canker sore has formed and seriously it works so well there’s no pain in the morning if I put it on at bedtime after just one application. If your canker sore is large you may have to apply it for a couple more days.

^^ Yes to the above.

Yes, it works after the canker sore has formed. Our prescription dental paste looks to be the generic of Kenalog in Orabase. Whatever has been said about my Triamcinolone Acetonide - Dental Paste - USP, 0.1% holds true for the Kenalog in Orabase and vice versa. So any accolades here mentioning one goes the same for the other.

@lamom mentions it in post #36 also.

Will add it to my arsenal! Thanks for mentioning it. And my kids are prone too but don’t seem to be proactive with the medication I’ve found so helpful so I’ll share this info with them as well.

Back for a report! We have a little improvement! Thank goodness - hoping tomorrow brings even more.

Long story…but I ended up cancelling the appt with the primary care doc - because when I got to work this morning, our secretary who came to us after working at the Ohio State School of Dentistry looked at me and said, “Abasket, cancel that appt - a PCP will be a waste of time. Let me text my friend an oral pathology doc and she what she says.” The doc was SO kind. She texted our secretary right back, asked for a photo, D2 took a photo and we forwarded it to doc. Doc said she would squeeze D2 in for an appt. This made so much sense I could knock my head! I hightailed it on the road for the 2+ hour drive there in time to pick D up and take her. They saw us quickly and bonus, the office was literally 5 minutes from D’s campus.

She said it was correct, canker sore, but canker sore gone rogue! She prescribed a steroid mouth wash. She said a gel or paste would be too difficult to apply because it is so far back in the mouth. The mouthwash would be more efficient. Might take a while for the sore to go away, but this would help with the pain which D was over the moon about. We promptly picked up the mouthwash and D took her first dose in the car - no time to waste!! She was actually able to eat a little lunch and dinner. This was after it was actually hurting her to talk this morning!

Hoping tomorrow’s second dose will increase the good effect. Doc said she had no concerns about mono or strep as there were no other symptoms and the clear symptom was a huge canker sore!

BTW, regarding the “magic mouthwash”. Doc said they call it that because it’s “magic” if it actually works!

So interesting all this discussion about canker sores though - clearly they are quite common!

Crossing fingers that my girl continues to improve. Thankful that I was able to go with her - she would have gone on her own but being it was a special favor to our secretary and a specialist I was glad I could go with her.

I gave my secretary a BIG hug this morning - that was so kind of her to reach out to her contacts to help us out.

@abasket, that’s great news. Keep us posted.

Happy to hear about your D getting a good treatment and feeling better @abasket Can you share the name of the mouthwash when you get a chance?

And thanks for the tip on Kenalog / Triamcinolone Acetonide guys, I’ll be asking my dentist for a prescription at my next checkup!
