We have spent many a summer in Cape Cod. We have done everything from renting a house in Wellfleet to camping and stuff in between. We have stayed in several towns. One year, things were tough financially, but just had to get away for a few days. One of the least expensive places to stay is So. Yarmouth It is a seaside town with lots of motels along Rt 28 that are reasonably priced and well below 200.00/ night. Lots of restaurants easily to walk to and there are sidewalks. All the motels have pools.
Suggestion: go to Tripadvisor.com and type in So. Yarmouth for your destination. About 20 motels and places to stay come up.
Chatham is beautiful, but very expensive. A great place to visit.

One of our must do on a visit is go to Provincetown and spend the day. Its an old harbor town that has kept pretty much the flavor of the old Cape Cod. Great people watching, stores, restaurants, some shows and whale watching, art gallery, old bookstore, portuguese bakeries. If youlike to drive and explore, the towns that are considered Lower Cape(although they are looking upper on a map) are more unspoiled and great to drive through and see the towns.
The National Seashore beaches do not require car tags and some of the best beaches are there, Coast Guard Beach, Nauset Beach just to name a few.
The have a great bike trail system.
Hyannis is very commercial and, we avoid it like the plague, lots of cars, a mall, no seaside appeal.
