Car title transfer from Illinois to California - how difficult is it?

I can’t answer that, as D has been in CA for almost two years and already had her license. But I’ll bet you can do it at AAA.

No. You have to go to DMV to get the California driver’s license. They don’t do that at AAA.

Thanks for the info. Would he have to get a CA license first before being able to register the car in CA?

We never bothered to convert the AAA membership from HI to CA and never had the kids have to sit through a sales pitch by anyone. They were pleased to use AAA as their DMV instead of the regular CA DMV and did go and get their smog test and new plates. Heard of no problems–the HI AAA is MUCH cheaper than the SoCal one.

We don’t have AAA insurance either, as they are MUCH higher with less coverage than D’s USAA and our local auto insurance. We just smile and shake our heads when they try to pitch us their great, over-priced policies.

For AAA, just get the road and tow, that way your kids can always use the DMV services at AAA. AAA is much too expensive for home and auto insurance. Check with an insurance broker to see which company will be the least expensive.
I am attaching registration of vehicle information for our state: http://apps.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/brochures/howto/htvr9.pdf</a>
If they plan on living in California for a while, they should get a license.

As posted previously, would urge the higher 100 mile towing package, especially in CA, as you can be far from a mechanic you know and trust when you need a tow. We are glad we had D and S get this, as it has already been used by us. It was used by a friend when their S had a car break down in San Diego and they wanted it towed back to LA.

That’s exactly what happened to D. She was almost 50 miles from home when she had her accident, and AAA was only willing to cover the first 7 or 9 miles (I can’t remember which). However, because the tow was necessary due to an accident and her truck was totaled, part of her towing was covered by State Farm.
