@ endicott : it is actually very very difficult to get into top universities here…however, i myself don’t agree with trow…on certain ‘negligible and commonplace’ issues, you cannot belittle an institution…albeit i was rejected, i hold the U of C in the highest regard and as i mentioned earlier, i applied only to 11 top-notch schools without any safety, so i always have regarded U Chicago to be high up their.i believe a rejection from the school should not put you off so much that you foul-mouth the school.

OP: you’re not the only one who got this letter dated Dec. 15, 2008. One of other guys I know has it too. He was confused if he was really rejected or not.

Yes, I agree–too much (many?) sour grapes here!

vandit_daboss: why don’t you try IIT Kharagpur?

UChicago does not consider socioeconomic environment, as it is a need blind school.

^It it is need-sensative for international.

Plus, they do consider if an applicant lives in a lower socioeconomic environment, their prespecive and expectations of those applicants are different than from one’s who are much higher. Even if it is need-blind, it can be pretty obvious the general socioecs of applicants through ECs, schools, essays, zip codes, if the applicant has to work to support one’s family, etc.

When a school is need-blind, a low socioec won’t HURT the applicant in the admissions process because of inability to pay. Need-blind schools can actively recruit people in lower socioeconomic environments because they aren’t pressured to reject them just for their inability to pay.

I got rejected, too. I won’t start talking bad things about the school, but it makes me feel better to see that I am not the only one who didn’t get an acceptance letter. Honestly, I expected the rejection letter, I’m fine with it, although I’ve always wanted to study in Chicago. I got accepted into 6 other schools, so getting one rejection actually helped me, because my decision became a little easier. :P

To make you all feel better, I got accepted by UChicago, WUSTL, but got rejected by Northwestern, UC Berkeley (I don’t even understand what its letter is saying - I think I’m offered a Spring session entrance or something) and waitlisted by Duke.

wow, that’s weird. You never know what college admission officers are looking for nowadays.
