Carnegie Mellon Summer Academy for Math and Science (SAMS) and AP/EA 2018

I had my teacher call yesterday, and the lady said they should come out Sunday. But she said if you haven’t gotten an acceptance yet then it’s a rejection :frowning:

@goldenLOVER_111111 :(( oh well I’m not that surprise. When people start getting emails, let the rest of us know please! Maybe there is still hope

@goldenLOVER_111111 Well that might not be exactly true as SAMS acceptances are coming out today. It may come out on a weekend though. But from what I heard yesterday, all decisions have been made and an email will be sent out by Monday at the latest. They also apologized for the wait.

CMU should have indicated that only your first choice would be considered. I applied for AI but thought that it was part of same program with SAMS. Now if I am turned down for AI, all the slots for SAMS (my second choice) will have already been taken. We are not even sure if the quality of the AI program will be the same as SAMS because it is new. Does anyone have any insights?

@silvercloud it would make sense that they would first take a look at your application to see if your competitive for SAMS and make a note of it if you didn’t get in AI. I’m assuming you might be put on waitlist for SAMS.

I really want to ask admissions about how far they are on the AI applications, but I really don’t want to bother them, they probably are really busy and annoyed at people just pestering them. If anyone has to call for any reason please also ask for me about AI. Thank you

It’s probably too late to apply for any camps right now, but if you live near a university you can get into contact with a professor or spend this summer studying for the SAT/ACT, working on a project towards something that you’re passionate about like if you want to be an architect you can start building in your backyard. Get some volunteer hours in, maybe even start up a summer tutoring club for those younger than you, start practicing with some common app essays… Carpe Diem! @plp000 And for those who didn’t get in, which is probably me haha, it wasn’t meant to be. But don’t just do nothing all summer- have fun, learn, meet new people. There are millions of ways to do that. And congratulations to everyone who did get in! I hope that this opportunity is amazing for you guys.

@silvercloud Your second choice actually would be considered, but putting SAMS as your second choice was probably not the best idea since SAMS is currently more established and had a large surplus of applications compared to last year. Because AI is a new program, it will need to build up traction like SAMS did when it was created 17 years ago. It is only three weeks, half the time of SAMS, and would be most helpful if you wanted to study at CMU because it is a precursor to their new AI major. You wouldn’t actually take classes, but rather lectures and sessions from professors at CMU and all around. If you play your cards right, it may help you get into CMU.

@MyGPAIsAnL Actually, SAMS would not have looked at you initially if you put it down as your second choice. Because AI and SAMS are separate programs, they will look over you at your first choice first and then send you over to your second choice if they decide to reject you. Also, I did talk to an admin yesterday, AI decisions have been made and will be released in a few days.

Has anyone gotten an email today? And when they say decisions, does that also include rejection emails?

We just called and I was told it was a rejection. So they will tell you over the phone. For the record:
URM
33 ACT
4.6 GPA
rural school
but high income and not first in family to go to college.

Good luck to everyone and have a great summer, whatever you do! Thanks so much for all the support!

I haven’t gotten an email and my name’s not in the directory for AI. Still have a chance?

@MyGPAIsAnL i’m in the same situation but i don’t think any AI decisions were released yet… right?

@plp000 I’m just wondering if AI people are in the directory or not

@MyGPAIsAnL hopefully we both got in and AI people aren’t in the directory:) Should i call them to ask for an AI decision or wait longer?

Did the application ask for financial info?

@pandasnake123 It asked for an estimate of your parents’ income.

any more info on the AI or SAMS decisions? Are all the SAMS decisions out yet?

Has anyone gotten into the AP/EA program? And has anyone gotten any emails today?

@ElfishPresely Hey! I was accepted in to SAMS and I’m from Indiana. (Indianapolis to be exact)

Congrats! When did you get the email? @CoolChem
