Carpet buying dilemma

How bad is the existing carpet? I’d be tempted to get it cleaned, take the refund, and order in the spring. I feel so sorry for your situation. Maybe less stress over the carpet would leave you time for something else.

Thanks for all the advice.

H wants to not cancel the order. Our window for installing carpet before people arrive for the wedding is closing but I can stop by the store and see if I can get something installed by next week. That’s the option H thought was best and I’ll see if I can get a high quality carpet that they have in stock. People are arriving next Wednesday so I have a feeling that won’t happen but you never know.

We have debated putting hardwood in for the almost 10 years we have lived in this house but keep coming back to carpet. We had hardwood in our last house. It was cold and noisy, it was fine but we weren’t wild about it. It’s hard to explain but this house has extensive wood already, Windows, doors, fireplace, columns, you name it. It’s so hard to come up with a floor without this place looking like all wood. And we don’t really want it, we like carpet, we want carpet. This is our forever house, we will retire here and right now can’t imagine moving anytime soon.

H hates engineered wood and I don’t think it would look good with all of the other wood in this house. Besides that’s not going to happen in 7 days either.

Carpet is in bad shape, it’s been cleaned but it was not helping. We thought about replacing it 2 years ago but went to Italy instead.

I do think it can be hard to put in wood floors to match existing wood well. At least, I’ve seen a lot of unsuccessful attempts at that.

Smart choice on Italy.

Deb: I’d go with #2. It sounds like you want this done and that carpet was your choice. Get something else that you like and is in stock. Does it have to be in before the wedding?

I have hardwood throughout my house (except for bathrooms). I use area rugs in almost every room as well. I like the look. We have radiant heat so the floor are not cold and that helps.

Well, no carpet by the wedding. I live in a small economically depressed area and the only carpet he had in stock was 1/3 of the cost of mine. I suspected as much. We really wanted to support a local business but this is what happens.

I told the owner that the carpet manufacturer had until Friday to get the carpet made. If he got the same song and dance, I was going to cancel. I personally think the manufacturer is not being truthful and that we are getting the runaround. So if there is more of the same, I told the local place that I was done. We’ll see how it works out.

So it’s disappointing but not much I can do.

So sorry for this disappointment. I know there’s an urge to have everything “perfect” for the wedding and it sounds as if you’ve done a lot of work to prep for the new carpet. I hope you’re able to get exactly what you want in the spring or whenever the best opportunity arises.

Is it possible to drive to a larger city and deal with a store there?
Your current owner would have opinions on where to go.

This sounds nuts but I might very well be shopping online–overnight samples,
hire a local carpet layer. I would no doubt do this at 2 a.m. :).
And it would probably turn out great.
Just a thought.

Ok–just took a quick look and, yes, this is something that can be done.
There are many carpets sold online.
That said, have you done an online search for the carpet you have chosen?
If you found it and it is in stock perhaps your local person could work with
you being a middle person.

Yes, it is hard for me to give up when faced with a dilemma! If you are at peace
then that is wonderful. And as our D just married two weeks ago I do know there
is lots going on. A few things I wanted done just had to be put aside.

Happy Wedding!

Another thought…if your store is willing (after all the trouble and waiting and time you have been through…) would they order the carpet and hold onto it in case there is a 3 day (or whatever time period it takes) warm up in October where they could then schedule the install at the last minute and you would get your carpet and airing out for allergies?? And if the weather doesn’t cooperate you have the option to have them hold the carpet until spring - or to sell it to someone else who wants it???

That might be a ridiculous option, but…

@doschicos , we are strictly wood with area rugs. I don’t hear any noise. On the other hand, we have very high ceilings and an old, sturdily-built house.

I think the foot noise depends on the person as much as the flooring material. Some people are just stompers. Doesn’t seem to correlate to size or weight either.
