I’ve also had a great experience with Honda Civics. My family has two - mine is a 1999 and there’s a mid-2000s one, not sure exact year. Mine made it through a side collision with a F-150 double the size. Hit us right on the side, my sister who was sitting right where it hit only got a black eye. That side of the car is dented in but it is still completely drivable and still gets great gas mileage. It has never cost me more than $25 to fill up. Highly, highly recommend. I was able to get mine for relatively cheap, too, pre-crash, only had 60k miles and was in perfect shape. No mechanical problems, even after the crash.
Chevy Tahoe
Ford Focus
Ford Escape
Honda, Honda, Honda. I don’t think I’ll ever buy anything else. We also have a 1999 Mercedes. which I bought used from a former colleague. Things on the body go bad all the time – thankfully, not on the engine. When our mechanic said, “If everyone drove a Honda like your husband, I’d be out of business,” that did it for me. Only Hondas from here on out.
We are a 2 PRIUS family.
We’ve had three Subarus, a Toyota Camry and a VW diesel Golf. I was really happy with my 2013 diesel golf until I found out it was the biggest polluter on the road and that now it’s worthless. It really is fun to drive and has great mileage. If and when I get compensated for this VW diesel, I’m going back to a Subaru - either Impreza wagon or a Forester.
Maybe it is just my own pet peeve, but I would have to get my car fixed if there is a dent or scratch. It would bother me as much as a run in my stockings or a stain on my suit.
^^^Yeah, but it’s really expensive.
Lexus LS430 - bought used at a great price and it has almost 200K miles on it and still going strong. Some dings on the body, but I’m not paying to fix them.
Acura RDX - my favorite car of all
We have a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. It gets great gas mileage and there’s plenty of room in the back for my tall teenage boys.
Have had a Toyota Sienna can and Hinda accord that have both been very inexpensive to maintain and reliable. We have had a series of Volvos. They are safe in accidents but more expensive and more frequent maintenance issues. Have not been very happy with the American cars.
Caravan (sucky, but useful), Nissan, Honda Odyssey, Honda Civic wagon… My favorites: my Honda CRV, and the new Subaru Outback - so comfy and quiet!
Wow this thread has been active while I’ve been gone. Reading the car threads two things amaze me.
- People are keeping their cars longer and driving it to 200,000 miles.
- The number of cars a family buys in their lifetime.
@oldfort You have purchased a lot of cars.
I live near a metro station and there is a lot of development in our area.
The developers are trying to make it a community where you can live, work, shop, and relax without needing a car.
I think it would be great if I could do away with having a car and use zipcar or rent a car when needed.
I like the idea of living near work and having all the conveniences walking distance or a metro stop away.
These days you can even have all your shopping delivered home even groceries.
We had ano acura mdx that we drove into the ground, it had virtually no repairs needed.
I drive a lexus rx 350 and like it, hubby drives a lexus ls460 and loves it. I like his car more than mine, but mine is more practical for carrying stuff like trips to home depot, etc
I lease my cars, so I can switch cars fairly often.
@eyemamom How nice it must have been having a car that doesn’t need repairs. My sister loves Acura. Another one only buys Volvos.
When I purchased a Camry I had lifetime oil changes for a one time fee of $30.
Never had mechanical problems with it but it was unlucky for me.
I was hit 6 times from behind in a matter of two years. Finally traded it in because I thought the car was jinxed. Thankful to have made it out in one piece.
Leasing cars is something I have not done. It is nice not having a car payment.
I’m glad you started this thread! I love my 10-yr-old Honda Pilot, but, because of an elderly relative’s incontinence yesterday, I may dump it. I had the seat cleaned today, but if there is any long-term odor, I’ve already told DH that I will be getting a new one.
Another 2 Prius family here (2006, 2015). Great mileage; no repairs, only maintenance.
2004 Camry with 204,000 miles. Have never had any problem with it. 2009 Civic hyrid which needed to have a battery replaced (one of the expensive ones, under warranty). 78k miles and other than that, no problems. 2014 RDX which has been great for the 16-hour round-trips to D’s college and back. Just a minor inconvenience when some grit worked its way into the backing plate.
Can’t believe we’ve driven to the moon and part-way back in our current cars.
@mansfield- love my rdx. Upset to get airbag recall notice today. Life threatening to you and passengers. Fix coming this summer. Must be completed by dealer within 60 days of fix being available. Call if you have questions. Yes, I have questions…
