I think the improvement in pet care can be a slippery slope. I left my vet’s office after 17 years because as the practice expanded and new vets were hired, I was disgusted by the guilt trips. Always pushing senior blood work, tests, extra procedures. When my senior cat needed all of his teeth pulled, they wanted me to pay for an echocardiogram because of a barely there heart murmur ( which we all knew was due to his hyperthyroidism)- they were insistent. I went to another vet and they did the extractions (for half the cost) without the $600 test.
