After reading this I was bracing myself during S1s cleaning yesterday. No cavities! Whoot whoot!! He was blessed with enamel like steel. It is not due to his dental hygiene. His back teeth looked surprisingly good, where most kids miss. He’s always used an electric brush which helps.
Another bullet dodged. I wish I had read about the fluoride varnish before he went. I’ll ask in February. When he goes again.
S3 was perfect. No surprise there. Loves his teeth, loves the dentist. Kind of a mutant there but I’m not complaining!
S2 is on a different schedule but is due to have wisdom teeth out. Has anyone had this done without the IV? He gets very sick with anesthesia. I can’t imagine being sick on your stomach after having your teeth out…hard for them to heal that way.

Apparently there’s a difference of opinion on this subject. I know in a country such as England that does not have flouride in the water, the incidence of decay in adults is much higher. I know my dentist always suggests that the kids continue to drink tap water.

Xylitol is supposed to be very helpful for kids w/mouths w/potential cavities (carries). My daughter’s dentist suggested she, in addition to using Squigle toothpaste and another special toothpaste, chew xylitol gum as often as possible and put some xylitol in her water bottle during the day and drink it all day long. Xylitol is just like sugar but different in that bacteria gobble it up AND it kills them! remember to keep xylitol toothpaste and products out of reach of pets…

Blueig, I had one wisdom tooth done under local many years ago, and it was one of the worst experiences of my life… I had the remainder done under general, and D1 had general as well. There have been some other threads on this, and I seem to recall a couple of people who had all of them done under local without issues. I can only speak to my experience. Better to be ill (even throwing up) than go through the local experience if it is like mine.

I just got back from the dentist and… NO CAVITIES!!! :D

Though my teeth were cleaned by someone i hadn’t seen before… she was rough and now i’m really sore. :(

intparent… Thanks. Right now he’s scheduled for local but we have the option to change our mind before the procedure that morning if the x-rays show difficulty. At least two are not impacted as they are already coming in. He gets sick even having blood drawn, but is violently ill with general. A member was kind enough to PM me and remind me of some of the anti-nausea meds that can be given. I’ll check with the pharmacy to remember which one eventually worked. I hate to see him in pain, fear, or go through being that sick again! This is one of those parenting moments where you wish you could do it in their place to spare them the pain! :(

S had his wisdom teeth out earlier this summer with local + nitrous oxide + ipod. He did OK. The oral surgeon was happier with people doing it awake if they had had some sort of dental work done in the past and would have some sort of idea what to expect.

One of my best friends is a Dentist and Professor at Baylor Dental School… He say the root cause (pun intended ;)) is that so many people are now drinking bottled water which has had the fluoride removed…he says the trend has been steadily increasing as bottled water usage has risen…almost a a direct correlation.

eadad: apparently your dentist and intparent’s dentist went to different schools. Mine went to yours.

When my two D’s had their wisdom teeth out the dentist recommended local for one of them because she has asthma. He used nitrous and novocaine and the insurance wouldn’t pay one penny for it although they paid the much higher price (partially, of course) for the other D’s general!
