Wow- you all had a lot more fun back in the day (I am in the midst of reading in the 2008 timeframe) than I have seen so far in 2011 (but this thread is getting there). :D

There are a lot of kids in our high school demographic for whom this applies. Kids live at home and commute to the local state college (a Cal State) which costs $5K a year. It used to be that the local University of California was below $10K, but it is now in the $11K range.

Private schools’ tuitions start in the high $20Ks and are unaffordable for most without a scholarship.

But for those who want the “college experience”, this isn’t it.

Off topic- can I just say that you are evil, evil people. Do you know how long it takes to read the meta thread from the beginning? I do. So much for shovelling, laundry, cooking and all the other chores. It also has warped me, I looked at one of the other threads “Highest ACT jump” and could only imagine how you all could interpret that and run with it… It was a bit disappointing to find the posts so prosaic.
On topic, I have little to say… D could pay not much (about $6K I think) to go to the state school she is considering and commute from home (which is kind of what she would like to do) but I agree that this is not the college experience I would want for her. But financially it makes a lot of sense. ETA- it was CC that helped me see beyond the labels of the schools to what was best for D.

Sure. But the on topic point really is that CC offers a lot of info to anyone getting ready to go to college. Test information, financial aid info, threads for the different colleges, information on majors, internship information, etc. Not just top performers.

jmmom-
poster#53 already took uppypuppy. Posters might get you two confused if you took uppitypuppy. Maybe momofuppitypuppy would be clearer. We don’t have enough “mom of XXX” posters around cc.

OMG, how funny! (confession: I even laughed as some of my own posts. I didn’t notice the name and certainly didn’t remember writing them. I guess I used to be kinda funny sometimes!)

Sybbie, I think the poor lad does not know that SA is not really selective and admits anyone who simply pops in! I certainly did not have any toubles to get in and even scored a feebie beverage! ;)

OMG, violadad, can’t blame garland for the meta thread (other than for birthing it). Looks like you and I are tied for the second and third most frequent # of posts in it. The winner: HarrietMwelsch!!
