Center for College Affordability & Productivity + Updated "Official" Forbes C

Stanford is 4th in the nation in US News but 20 something on that list.
Cornell is not there for a while. same with Berkeley. Wash U. Dartmouth.
etc.

Yeah, I’ve read your posts and I know that you’re not one of those “OMG IVY LEAGUE OR DIE” people… haha, sorry if it came across that way.

Anyways, highopes covered it. Rankings are quite arbitrary, mostly because of the fact that someone is sitting there deciding how heavily different things should be weighted (and, of course, the fact that many things can’t be quantified in the first place.) Someone in a different thread mentioned a website that gives you a choice as to how to weight different criteria, so you can create rankings more suited to your interests and priorities…

They are still on that list. It just so happens that more than a dozen LACs outrank them and therefore push them to the bottom.

Yeah, I was quite surprised about that. I’m a tad on the youngish side for giving colleges this much thought, but the tentative “list” I have doesn’t contain many of the liberal arts colleges…err… not any. except Brown.

I should give them more thought, apparently, no?

It’s hard to admit, but USMA beats USNA across the board in every category except selectivity and SAT scores. USMA deserves to be that high, trust me.

^ Brown isn’t an LAC. Dartmouth is the only Ivy that would fit that definition.

It isn’t? I think they claim themselves to be. Or maybe they have a reputation as a “liberal arts school”. Is that the same thing as a LAC?

^^ no. Brown prides itself on the liberal arts, and of course on its liberal education (read: open curriculum).

Liberal arts schools typically have only undergrads. Dartmouth doesn’t even quality as a LAC, but it’s similar to one.

The reason some schools seem to be lower is because this Forbes ranking basically combines the USNews Top National Universities and Top LAC’s - which, again, shouldn’t be taken as fact - but there’s nothing really out of the ordinary with this ranking.

Also, Brown isn’t a LAC, but the atmosphere there is similar to one - very liberal, open curriculum, etc. And LAC’s aren’t for everyone (I’ve certainly ruled them out for myself) but if you like a small school with certain special characteristics, you should think about some LACs, at least initally in your college search.

cards in a deck baby

I’m seeing no UCs until Cal, which is 73. What?

USNA > USMA in football as well :frowning: Army beat Navy :(

Lol, Cornell at 71,

Duke, Hopkins, Emory rounding out 80-82?

double tee eff?!?

EDIT: Oops, Cornell College at 71

**Cornell University <a href=“''The%20Ivy%22”>/B is at 121…on the 5th page…

crazy ****, i tell you.

i’m one for a bigger university with a ton of students.
not obnoxiously huge, but quite large.

If you haven’t seen the new “rankings” published by Forbes this week, you are certainly in for a good laugh. If you think college rankings are pointless to begin with, then Forbes has redefined “worthless” in this context.

Which ranking is Forbes’ most ridiculous?

I say placing NYU at #324 is easily the most ridiculous.

Any other suggestions? So many to choose from.

These ratings are a total joke. The top ten are pretty predictable, then you get Wabash and Centre at #12 and #13? Riiiight.

Oberlin at #51? Berkeley at #73? Georgetown #76? Hopkins #81? Grinnell #107? Cornell #121? Ouch.

Just what kind of randomizing algorithm did they use to come up with these silly lists?

This is one of the most ridiculous rankings I’ve ever seen. They’ve put Dartmouth at 130, but Centre College at 13. Oh, please.

They use ratemyprofessor.com as a tool in determining rankings, which is the most ridicules thing I’ve ever heard in college rankings. Everyone knows that ratemyprofessor is a very skewed source—you’re more likely to get the people who really loved or (especially) really hated profs, not an overall balanced view. Plus some profs aren’t even listed. Not to mention some schools have internal systems of review profs (some still release student reviews for everyone to see, others have ratemyprof like sites only accessible to students by the school), so those schools will have a much less comprehensive ratemyprofessor section than others.

And number of alums in Who’s Who?

Silly.

Is this on a website???

WOW, such hatred for the Forbes list! Golly!

Look, I don’t know how they came up with this list, but you should ATLEAST give it as much respect as you give US NEWS. Everybody seems to respect US NEWS top colleges as TOP COLLEGES. Some argue against a few, or defend a few, but I think it’s funny that all though most of you condemn the US NEWS report, you laugh and mock at a list that has a different way of ranking things.

IDK if it was this thread or another thread based on the FORBES list, but someone said “I haven’t even heard of those colleges! They can’t be that good.”

And there you go, CC. Now do you know what’s silly???

P.S. I for one don’t agree with the list lol I just don’t think you all should ATTTTTTTACKKKK it because a lot of the usual “prestigious” institutions didn’t make it.
