Hispanic Female (Peruvian)
3.91 Unweighted GPA. Took lots of IB and honors classes. School doesn’t weight GPA but I have all the possible honors classes for the given year and 5-7 IB classes each semester.
Rank: 27/ 394. Ranked behind kids with no advanced classes so that hurt.
1730 SAT I - 580 CR 540 M (ouch) 610 WR
A few leadership positions, volunteer work. Excellent recommendations.

I got good grades in IB classes… only got 4 B’s ever. But what do you mean by how did I do in the classes? I didn’t take SAT II’s…

My family income is low. Single parent household, 3 people. Only 1 parent works and makes around 22k… I’m guessing my EFC will be close to zero?

Your low income is great for your chances. I’d guess over 50% because of your GPA, ECs and socio-economic background

How would my low income help? Do they look at that?

No, they don’t. They only look at your financial information when you’ve been accepted or in ED case to calculate estimate awards for students, NYU is need-blind so I disagree that a certain socio-economic background will help you.
I got accepted into LSP with a 530 math score. I had a 630 and 700 for the other two, however. The only way that your sat score might not drag you down is if you have taken math ib exams or english related exams etc and have succeeded. If you show strengths in these areas they might get over the sat score. If this is not the case, your best hope is LSP but that’s hard enough to get into, you need to have set yourself apart somehow through your writing, supplement answers, and activities.

Hey, I am also Peruvian (but not a girl) and I will be applying to NYU next year too.

Cool stuff.

You’re going to have to raise that SAT score! Or try the ACT if you feel like the SAT is annoyingly difficult. ACT is difficult too but it doesn’t really test knowledge; speed is the name of the game. If you’re a super fast test taker, don’t even bother with the SAT. Just score a 30+ on the ACT and you’ll be fine.

In your favor:
- Nationality + Ethnicity: face it, NYU is all about globalism and diversity, you embody that incredibly well
- GPA: demonstrates both intelligence and work ethic
- IB status: colleges tend to love kids who take the (arguably) most challenging high-school curriculum possible
- Class rank: top 10% is great, you almost broke into the top 5%

Not in your favor:

I’d say you have a great shot at getting in, but in LSP. What they’ll do with candidates who they really like but who have one or two aspects of their application that really concern the admissions office is defer you from your original school into LSP.
