Chance a rising senior [international, needs full FA, engineering or neuroscience]

Do you think I have a reasonable chance if I Ed in NYU ?

If the NPC shows zero contribution - no.

B4 you ED anywhere, make sure you understand your need situation- not as you see it but as the schools see it.

Unfortunately I have no idea. Most of us on CC are “just” parents who may be able to make educated guesses, but who really have no special knowledge.

While you don’t need to name your country, is it one where the QS world rankings matter to future employment? That’s important as most likely you’ll return home after your US education.

Is a US education (regardless of renown) more important than international prestige? For example, last year an international student received a full ride (plus) to Univ of Southern Mississippi. That’s not a school on any international’s radar, but it provided the resources to allow them to attend a US university. If you’re willing to apply widely you’ll have better chances.

I’m another big fan of W&L and it is very generous with aid; however, it is not a good fit for engineering majors, particularly international. Once you provide more information we can help you develop a reasonable list. Wishing you the best!

How do you have a 4.0 GPA with two B+ grades?

Ok , can you tell me exactly what information do you want and I will send it ?

Yes

Sorry I didn’t see how , I don’t know my counselor told me my GPA when i was applying to a program.

How do you rank academically compared to students at your school in the padt 10 years? How do you rank academically compared to students in your country?
(Estimate - like, top 1% nationally, top 10% nationally
).

Since your school has sent students abroad before, is it known in thr US? Were the students admitted to NYU full pay or did they need a lot of aid?

Do you know who else in your school is applying to the US?

Are you Asian as in India/Korea/Japan/Pakistan, or are you Filipino, Hmong, Sri Lankan, Nepalese?
(Because if the former, it’d be even harder for you).

Is the Sept 14 ACT test date possible?

Does your national educational system offer external/national exams? For instance, if you’ve taken iGCSEs and are preparing ALevels, you would be judged based on those at Harvard with no need for an ACT score (but not at Yale for instance AFAIK).

Is it more important to you to attend a US college regardless of location OR to attend a specific type of US college if you can’t get into those you’ll stay in your home country?

In the past 10 years I have been the first on my school except in 3rd grade I was ninth and in 5th grade I was fifth .
After grade 10 I was awarded a summer program to Japan because of my rank but unfortunately it didn’t happen due to financial issues in my country .
I am considered from the top 1% in my country.
Basically my school system consists of a group of schools around the country for each there I about 150 students admitted each year . So some friends of mine were admitted to NYU with full aid and also there is one who went to an ivy league and another to MIT and one to Stanford from another school in the same system and there were others also accepted to some colleges . For my school the last admission cycle wasn’t that great but the admission cycle before it there was one who was accepted to W&L and another one to Minerva and one for URochester and one in Umiami and several in international colleges outside US.
No my National system doesn’t offer any international exams , you need to be in an international school.
I don’t mind applying to any state in the US , the location itself doesn’t matter for me .
I am from a low income family about 4000 dollar a year, we can pay up to 5000 dollars a year depending on our savings and some of the money my parents make , If that information matters , My dad and mom have Ph.ds and they are professors at a local college.
Lastly, I will try to take the 14th September exam but I can’t guarantee so can you help me assuming I 'll apply test optional.

You don’t understand - many of the schools you seek now require a test. Also, many schools with big merit (Alabama, as an example), require a top test to get it.

Test optional at many schools (Ivies, etc.) is no longer a thing. They are test required or recommended for the most part - which means the same.

I really understand that well and I know Ivies are not for me , but i also know that Some students in my country and in other countries have accepted test optional like one or two of those who were accepted to NYU . I know how much that affect my chances but really I am no taking the exam because i don’t want to study . It is something out of my hands so all what is ask is to recommend some colleges and thanks for your help :pray:t2:

You can try it cold turkey.

If you want to go to a top school, you cannot say - well I want the best but I don’t want to try.

What can your family afford - anything?

There was a suggestion above - where a student got a full ride at Southern Miss.

Thanks for all the answers.

For the exam like igcse/ALevels, it was just an example of the type of exams considered - ie , they can’t be written and graded by your teachers but must be given to all students in your subject/track/course/system. You can enail each university with a required test policy to see whether your system’s exams are considered external/standardized or not.
NYU has the same policy as Harvard wrt external exams replacing US standardized tests for internationals if they choose.

With your record and test optional, I would apply to Bowdoin or Amherst ED. They meet full need and do not count how much money your parents make against you.
Because your school is a known quantity at NYU and W&L, it would be worth investigating, if at all possible, whether the students who were admitted needed a full ride or not. Bowdoin, Amherst, W&L, however, would preclude Engineering - they offer STEM degrees but not ABET accredited Engineering.
There’s also this

Which is very smartly designed and different from a typical 3+2, but the issue would be whether Dartmouth would offer the same financial aid package than your original college.

If Engineering is your key criterion, I don’t think you can apply test optional.

This student may not be able to register or get to the test. If there’s civil strife for instance roadblocks may make travelling to the capital impossible, not to mention the costs and/or possible dangers.
They’ve said they’d studied for the ACT but that taking the test is out of their hands.

The family makes 4,000 a YEAR.

Please correct me if I’m wrong, but I want to make sure we understand your needs/preferences

  • Will most likely be test optional (this is limiting)
  • Open to any US school offering ABET engineering for meche or biomed (in other words, not “prestige” based)
  • Need close to full aid
  • High academic rank in your competitive school and country

ETA: I’ve seen updated information since I wrote this post. :mending_heart:

Actually, Columbia has committed to remaining test optional indefinitely.

The reason of not taking the ACT is not money and please I don’t want to talk about it
Our savings can easily help to pay for many things there not including the tuition+ like all of the accepted students in my country were in the same case not to mention those who were worse

Yeah I think that is correct

Yes but look at the percentage submitting and engineering likely higher. It’s easy to say you (Columbia) are TO but are you really ?

My statement was general.

He can apply.

Best of luck to the statement.

OP. You say you are full need but then you say you have money.

You don’t determine need. Schools do.

You need to be honest with yourself here.
