Does this mean his GC will not contact GT to reiterate his desire to attend? Good on completing the GT supplement.
I still don’t understand if your S has applied to GSU or not. If he has not, do not wait. I don’t know for sure but they may limit the number of CS major students, or those in honors, which your S would likely get…please check into this, and complete the app now.
There are many schools still accepting applications. Google prepscholar’s list of colleges with late application deadlines.
Double check on each school’s website that the prepscholar dates are correct. Here are some schools that are strong in CS and still accepting apps, that will be highly likely admits for your S (and some may give him merit):
There are many more, but that’s a good start, note that some of these schools have Feb 1 application deadlines, and may need official test scores to be sent. If you want more suggestions, let us know the parameters (size, geography, etc.)
I know that this process can be confusing and stressful. But there is still time to apply to other good CS programs, with the goal that he have choices come college decision time.
Georgia Tech defers a lot of students. As an in-state student, your son has an advantage during RD because the majority of highly qualified out of state students have been admitted EA. If your son ranks in the top 10% in his class, GT shouldn’t be a problem for him. Did he apply EA to UGA? If he is accepted by UGA and goes there for a year, he can transfer back to GT later.
You started this post asking for Cornell. If you are hoping for an Ivy, that needs a lot of luck because the top colleges are hard to get in for everyone.
Top CS programs don’t care about much IT internships unless it’s with big tech companies like Microsoft, Google, etc. They care more about your discrete mathematics aptitude. GSMST is a top STEM school in Georgia and they have a very strong competition math team. Has your son done any competition math like AMC 12? Coming from GSMST for CS, he is expected to have a pretty impressive AMC 12, AIME, USAMT scores.
The senior class at GSMST this year has 6 students who have a perfect SAT and/or ACT. So it’s a very competitive high school. This should reflect well on your son, at least colleges should know your son is well prepared.
@gRw110, you may have other info sources for those 6 students, but being nominated for the Presidential Scholars program does not require perfect a SAT/ACT.
Is 35 perfect ACT score ? I think 36 is perfect . He is 100% confident that he will get RD from GTech or transfer from GSU as he is also a hardworking kid. He wants to graduate from GTech
We had a huge discussion yesterday and he is like " don’t talk about me in college confidential "
I learned a lot from this group.
According to my S only one person got into Tech CS EA. Most of his friends are deferred, conditional or rejected and other major got in ( don’t quote me on this, my source is my S) so they do have CAPS.
SAL and VAL got deffer ed from MIT and are only waiting for that only.
Programmer here…CS is a ridiculously employable degree, so it’s really not going to matter where he graduates from. After about 3 years of experience, employers won’t care because they’re going to be desperately trying to find qualified applicants for a job that’s been vacant for 5 months. That’s the fun with tech jobs. You’re the qualified candidate that saves the day.
Best thing to do is find somewhere affordable. In-state would be ideal. The first several years, he’ll be living on a modest/decent salary, so keeping debt down would be very helpful. By the time he makes enough to drive a Lexus, his loans will be paid off anyway. Not everyone drives a Lexus either. Many of us choose to settle in jobs making less money than what we could because the job and atmosphere is a great fit.
I am also a programmer/ statistician and so is my husband. Both CS (18 years ago)
We want him to go to a college with a best CS program, work harder and fulfill his dream which is soon to be a CDO unlike us, love our job, atmosphere and whatnot.
We are first generation immigrant, language barriers and what not, low self confidence but still manage to survive.
He will do good wherever he goes.
How can I delete the comment. Can I ask admin? I am sorry I didn’t know.
The high ACT/SAT scorer info is a public knowledge and can be shared. You mentioned your child’s school, which is one of the top STEM schools in the South, and I thought you might want to know how competitive the students at your son’s school are.
You should also know that many kids have been coached to fake their ACT/SAT scores. American kids may tell you a higher score to show off, but many Asian kids would do the opposite to avoid unnecessary competition. I wanted to point this out since you mentioned your son is an Asian male.
I would take it easy. I believe your son will be able to get into GT during RD. It would be crazy for GT not to admit more students from your son’s school.
