Chance for CalTech/MIT/Princeton/Berkeley ?

You have a really good chance at all of these universities (Berkeley could even be considered a safety lol) Just keep in mind that HYP and other top universities are lottery schools but you have a higher chance then a lot of applicants! Good luck!

BLEH ANOTHER GENERIC ASIAN APPLICANT says the admissions office.

Read this: <a href=“The App Style - A College Application Guide”>http://theappstyle.com/guide/

Unless you absolutely love solving integrations of fractal equations and problems pertaining to stochastic calculus in your free time, do something you enjoy for ECs.

[I’m thinking about organizing and holding a science expo/ educational convention type thing for my nearby underprivileged neighborhood. I could invite scientists or professors to come give a little speech and advertise in the local newspaper. Would something like that be enough of a “hook”]

^This really scares me. Please don’t organize an expo for the sake of getting a hook…

Of course I’m doing it because I want to. I was hoping my volunteer activities would be a breath of fresh air apart from my academic extracurriculars. I dedicate at least 6 hours a week volunteering at a mentally disabled children’s school and I organize a drive to raise sleeping bags each year. Are these not “non-academic” enough?

No, they are still too academic. Here is what you do. Go on Craigslist. Look for an old muscle car in a barn somewhere. Buy it. Restore it and do all the work yourself.

Berkeley high match
Cal Tech reach
Mit high reach
Princeton reach

I would honestly say you are a pretty good match for all of them. Oh how I wish I had your ACT score! As many have already said and I’m sure you know, you need something to make you stand out to get into schools like these though. You seem very intelligent and I’d say at least one is a definite match. Good luck.

well i think you will get into berkeley and then at least one of the other schools do try improve your ecs but your non profit is helpful i would apply to one or two more schools that are of this caliber just to try and improve the odds of you getting into one of them.

also don’t get discouraged by all these people who say reach or high reach because the truth is its not. I think that a reach implies that you are not a qualified applicant but you are actually one of the most qualified applicant i have ever seen. Its just the schools are basically a crapshoot but you have a strong chance at all.

@paddyf thanks for the confidence boost!

Totally jealous of your scores.

Do something INCREDIBLE over the summer, I can’t tell you what, but make it something you’re passionite about. Also use it to prove you are social/cultured (learn an instrument in your spare time if you can). You can tell a lot about someones character by the way they respond in the comments and you appear to have a great one. You will go to a great school no matter what happens and are in an excellent position, but if you want to have a better shot at MIT/Princeton do something EC related that shows character.

I will most likely be gone nearly all summer at hopefully SIMR or Clarks, so I won’t really be able to do much other than the spare time I have after research hours. I’m just trying to figure out what more I can do with my short time left aside from essays

Any other thoughts?

I think people are giving you way too much advice about EC’s. With your academics, you will get accept at a great school… perhaps even CalTech or MIT. Maybe just Berkeley or UCLA. These things cannot be predicted. I guarantee you that you will have a successful academic career.

What you need to pay the most attention to is paying for tuition. Student loans could kill your chances for medical school. It is better to go to a less prestigious university which gives you a merit scholarship than to go to a very prestigious university which loads you up on student loans. As I mentioned on the other thread, check out the following schools:

Washington University in St. Louis
Johns Hopkins University
Carnegie Mellon University
University of Rochester
Boston University (which has a large Asian population)

All are great engineering schools and all have excellent pre-med programs.

Your main disadvantage for Berkeley is that you are Asian… The school is heavily Asian already, as you likely know, and there are many complaints the last few years that they are discriminating against Asians and not letting as many in, despite great qualifications.

Bump! Also curious, how helpful is Questbridge (either College Prep or Choice) and does the fact that I’m first generation college help?

your app looks really similar to this one. same format, same extracurriculars and everything lol

uh i have no idea lol that post is new than mine so

shameless bump
