Chance for Cornell AEM ED for an Indian male rugby player:)

I’m a member of the rugby team. While not a varsity sport with recruiting privileges, Rugby is rapidly expanding. Women’s rugby is an NCAA sport and the league projects that after the 2016 Olympics 7’s at the very least will earn recognition.

We’ve been poor the last few years but picked up an international level coach this offseason and are currently 4-0. We can’t pull an strings with admissions but we try to offer admissions help from an informal perspective, especially for guys who played in HS since most of us came from football or wrestling backgrounds. There are guys on the team in pretty much every major and many of them are big intellects and can help. Shoot me a PM or email me and I’ll put you in touch with our recruitment guy.

As far as your admission chances goes, your SAT is within 50 points of mine and most people I know who got in. Your GPA is low, most people I know that aren’t legacy or oppressed minority admission were a 4.2+ weighted and a 3.85+ unweighted, but you took challenging AP Coursework that few other applicants will have, especially Comp Sci. The AP scores are low and unless your high school is just all around crap are prepping kids for it, admissions will probably hold it against you.The biggest things for the essay and recs is to market yourself and make yourself appear singular. I did a good job of showing I was well rounded, showing an equal passion for both sports and academics in my essay and got a rec from an AP instructors whose class I killed, as well as my chem teacher who doubled as my coach. (Used common app for a sports experience that changed me, the supplement essay to really emphasize what I was into intellectually) It also helps that you have EC’s that have basis in real life experience.

I can promise you that AEM, while competitive, is probably one of the easiest employable majors the school has. AEM majors are perpetually, along with ILR and Hotel the butt of most of the “you party all the time” jokes, which is somewhat funny because the hard partying of most AEM majors translates well into the I-Banking/Finance/Trading world. But more on that after you get in.

Again, reach out to me and I can put you in touch with the rugby team officers who can give some specific advice.
