Chance/Match an Asian male, CA resident 3.5 GPA/1550 SAT interested in CS

Given S24 lower GPA and the popularity of CS major, he lacked confidence in the outcome and applied to several schools that may have been unnecessary.

As long as you have one to attend, it’s all good.

The goal is to find that one - and hopefully your student has or will.

Many of our kids over applied…it’s all good.

S24 was admitted to Toronto (CS) and McGill (Phys, Earth, Math, & CS) this week. He was also accepted to UBC (Science) earlier. How do they compare to US schools?

Toronto, McGill, and UBC are all considered excellent universities, although they are huge and probably have substantial commuter populations due to their locations in three of the larger metros in Canada.

S24 is interested in UofT, but he missed the guaranteed housing deadline, so he will likely have to live off-campus. I am concerned that he may miss out on the college experience and making connections with other students.

Assuming it’s affordable, I’d look into options before removing UToronto, if it’s his first choice.

Have you asked housing if they prioritize international students when allocating on campus housing? He might be at the top of the waitlist, or they may still have capacity for international students even though the guaranteed date has passed.

There is also private student housing available off campus. Sometimes the large furnished buildings will roommate match, have nice shared amenities like pools and gyms, and planned social events. It seems like some are adjacent to the campus. He could also purchase a meal plan for eating on campus.

Thank you for your advice about checking with the residence office and for providing the link to off-campus housing. S24 and I have started looking into it.

UofT is among his top choices. However, the residence application process is more complicated because it is a college system.

After checking with the residence office, the deadline for guaranteed housing has been delayed until 6/3. Additionally, the deadline for the admission deposit has been moved to 5/15. S24 now has some time to think through his decision.
