Thanks for taking the time to share your insights and experiences. Also congrats to your daughter!
I can’t speak to Clemson at all, but FWIW, a few small comments on your Baylor notes from a Baylor grad:
-
Re: less of a Greek/drinking culture, that may well be true in comparison to Clemson, but I think it’s fair to say that Baylor has a significant Greek culture that plays a large role on campus, and at least some parts of it are similar to what you’d find at any big state school. With no Greek housing on campus, it’s mostly centered off-campus and thus somewhat less visible than at other schools, but sometimes people are surprised to hear that such things exist at a Christian school. That said, there are definitely other social options, and in fact Baylor has a significant contingent of students who avoid the party scene for religious reasons.

Re: STEM, Baylor has always been well-known for pre-med studies and specifically Biology, in part due to its historical relationship with the Baylor College of Medicine. The two are not formally affiliated anymore, but the undergrad programs in natural sciences remain strong. I can’t speak to Engineering, and I’m sure you are right that a school like Clemson is deeper and more diverse in that area.
Best wishes to your family!
It doesn’t bother me that either Greek life and/or drinking exist at Baylor. I just don’t want her to be socially judged by those who expect her to participate in either or both to the degree they might at other schools.
I wouldn’t actually be opposed to her joining a sorority (I was in one), but I don’t think it suits her personality or interests whatsoever.
Sorry can’t figure out how to combine replies.
Anyway, yes that is the major advantage that Clemson has. OTOH, I know Baylor is dedicated to developing their engineering department and has some emerging disciplines.
Clemson is just so far from us, and it’s a good bit more expensive, and I don’t know that their depth in engineering can make up for those two negatives. ETA: when all this started, there was a significant chance we were going to relocate to the SE—that is not happening now, at least for the time being.
My daughter has officially decided to attend Baylor.
We are all very happy! Baylor seems the best combination of fit and finances, and it became obvious to all of us.
Thanks so much to everyone who participated in this thread for their help during this process. You really did help, more than you know.
(I wrote a much longer comment on the Parents forum…!)
