Good advice about the budget. And thank you for the compliment. I’m biased of course, but I think she’s amazing.
I doubt we can afford Clemson, but since she’s a double legacy her Dad really wanted her to try. Of the six, I am least confident about her acceptance to Clemson. Miami meets 100% of demonstrated need and the financials should work for us. We aren’t the target for HBCUs, but thank you for the other suggestions.
You remarked similarly, 55 posts ago, and the OP responded
Not suggestions. Just letting you know who is accredited in optical. Very few. If that’s her interest, short of UCF and meets need Rochester, those are the only places.
The others were merely based on your budget comment.
I think you already have a winner.
Norfolk State will meet the <$45k cost, since its list price is $39k for non-Virginia residents, $27k for Virginia residents: https://www.nsu.edu/financial-aid/cost-of-attendance . However, it has only one other engineering major (electrical / computer) besides optical engineering, so that may be limiting if the student is somewhat undecided on what kind of engineering. It does have an art department and major with a subarea of photography. See https://www.nsu.edu/Academics/Academic-Programs/Program-Search .
HBCUs are open to any student who meets the admission criteria.
While I appreciate the clarification, that isn’t what we’re looking for.
Congratulations on the admit to U. of Arizona! It’s wonderful that she has an acceptance to a school that she’d be excited to attend!
@DivineMarshmallow, this thread may be of interest: Character animation and modeling? Help me figure it out?
@Luanne’s daughter was interested in some combination of art, engineering, and CS, and it sounds as though some of the programs mentioned in that thread might be of interest to your D (who also seems undecided…very normal!..switching from engineering design earlier in the year to optical engineering now). Some schools’ programs that might be of interest include: Rochester Institute of Technology (not the same as U. of Rochester), U. of Utah, Ohio U., U. of Cincinnati, Old Dominion, and U. of Alabama-Huntsville, but the programs and reasons why (plus other options) are better explained in that thread.
Thanks for all the info. It probably does seem that she is all over the place, but the idea behind the major at Arizona would be to design camera lenses and minor in photography. It is still somewhat a combination of engineering + design. She is not declared for that though.
Sometimes it is hard to convey the thought process on a message board. Her first choices are still the majors at U Miami and CU Boulder.
If you are in state, CU will happen and affordably so.
It will happen if OOS but affordability will not happen…nor at Miami which is 50/50 for admission but I lean toward in as a female in engineering.
I’m really confused by this comment. I’ve run the NPC for Miami like 5 times. They meet 100% of demonstrated need. We can afford it.
Sorry I wasn’t factoring need. I was thinking full pay but you mentioned above.
Good luck.
Congratulations on that first college acceptance. Looking forward to hearing about the rest of her applications…and where she decides to matriculate by end of April!
Excellent first news!
Thank you so much!
Update— my daughter received notification of her merit scholarship from Arizona today. We’re so thankful! There is a lot to like about this school from our point of view…not least of which is the all girl’s dorm! We told our daughter that * in our opinion* , her time and energy should go into applying for more scholarships vs. applying to more colleges.
So excited! My daughter has been accepted to Baylor! Sic ‘em bears!
However we’re a little disappointed because she received the second level of merit aid. (Like everyone else, we were hoping for the highest amount.) While that is very generous, it still puts the school just out of reach.
Does anyone know about financial aid at Baylor? We qualify for aid at private colleges.
Congrats to her.
From an offering and industry respect POV in engineering, Baylor - while having ABET accredited programs, is simply not on Arizona’s level.
You also have to factor in the religious angle - does that work for you or does it not ?
The last thing to note - there are colleges out there that increase merit to students that remain undecided ‘late’ - meaning they need more students - so it might make sense to wait for a school like Baylor if wanting to attend.
Here’s a thread I started. See the first school on the list.
Good luck
The religious aspect is the primary reason she applied.
Thanks for the info! We are about nine or ten thousand away / per year from making it work. We will have to see.
We are visiting the U of Arizona next month so that should be quite telling as well.
Well if you wait until late to respond (close to May 1), they might close some of that gap - for simple reason of needing more butts in seat.
So in your case, waiting could make good sense.
btw - Tucson > Waco - and it’s not even close Yes, personal opinion.
I agree about Waco.
I wanted to add…
If my daughter for whatever reason doesn’t like engineering or can’t hack it, U of Arizona has more backup majors that she is interested in.
