Chance/Match Me: Rising Senior in IL [3.8 GPA, 35 ACT, CS major]

“SDSU is an unknown”

Curious about what you mean by this? Are you saying it’s a tossup as to whether OP would get in? I suppose that could be true but I noticed recently (after so many kids from our school have been going to SDSU) that their OOS acceptance rate is super high…87 percent last year. With an acceptance rate that high I would think it would be a likely admit for OP.

OK - that’s fair.

Yes, that’s exactly what I meant. Statistically OP is in but of course they won’t see the ACT/SAT and I know the major is tough.

Perhaps, to your point, the OOS $$ would help??

I’ve also read stories of, for example, and I know it’s the exception vs. the rule, but someone getting into UCB but declined here.

But yes, that’s why I said an unknown - but it would be warm weather, traditional campus, and a non-conservative state!!! Hence I mentioned it.

Thanks

SDSU admits by major, and is not transparent about what majors are more or less competitive for admission, unlike some other CSUs like SJSU.

Cal Poly SLO? Illinois Institute of Technology?

Not an option for CS.

Incorrect. It absolutely is an option for CS. Internal transfers for students already on campus can not transfer in to CS. External transfers can. It’s specifically mentioned on the webpage I linked.

Sorry, my mistake.

I have a bunch of volunteer activities that I did (daily in-school tutoring for AP CS, schoolhouse SAT tutor). Would that impact my list?

No. Your ECs are fine.

Impacting your list is the amount of mega heavy reaches and secondarily applying to schools you don’t seem to want to afford - but getting into those is highly unlikely. Nothing you can alter will change that.

Note I am not an adcom so it’s my opinion but that doesn’t mean it’s right.

Lots of very solid suggestions were provided. All would be great gets.

Agree. Would also add UNH and UVM.

Colorado State is a great school, while being both an easier admit and less expensive than Mines or U of Colorado. You would most likely get into their Honors program, which is excellent.

I think adding all of the above to your list could bring in some merit and Honors offers that you can weigh against each other.
