Chance/Match Me: Science-focused Activist HS Junior [NY resident, 90.07 UW, 1490 SAT] for Marine Bio/Sci Major, Env Studies Minor]

100% understandable! The great thing about this page is that you might learn about schools you never heard of! Don’t like the heat?-Thus sharing some more freshwater options as well. Milwaukee has masters and PhD in freshwater science so its a pretty strong program.

Oh thanks for the GPA calcs!!! I’m at a 3.75 apparently

If 3.75 is weighted capped for UC and CSU, then CSUMB and CPH seem pretty safe for admission. But CPSLO and the named UCs seem reachy.

Note that UCs and CSUs require frosh applicants to have a year of art in high school (or 3 credit college art course).

Update: got my SAT score back and I got a 1490 (800 RW, 690 M)! Not sure if this changes anything but here you go just in case

Congratulations on your SAT scores. Great job!

The California publics (UCs and Cal States) are test blind, so they will not see your test score, so it won’t help you there. But at schools that are test-optional or test required, your test score will certainly enhance your application.

You might want to take a look at Drexel, in Philly. Drexel has a great science program with amazing research opportunities. Not only is it a queer affirming campus, but so is Philly as a whole. (Mom of two LGBTQIA kids here with lots of friends who attend nearby colleges).

Since you’re looking at some west coast schools… Oregon State is a top school for oceanography, with majors in both Oceanography and Marine Studies, plus a Marine Biology minor, and related majors like Climate Science, Ecological Engineering, Geospatial Science, Natural Resources, and Fisheries Wildlife & Conservation Science. OSU has its own coastal Marine Science Center, with multiple research vessels, and time in residence there is built into the degree programs. Here’s a general page about marine-related programs: Ocean and Coasts | Undergraduate Admissions | Oregon State University The Honors College is excellent and has a holistic admissions process that might make it attainable. Unlike the CA publics, OSU will consider your strong SAT score. Housing-wise, there is this: https://uhds.oregonstate.edu/pride-special-interest-community

While Portland is the epicenter of LGBTQ+ activism in Oregon (an incredibly trans-friendly city), and Corvallis is about 90 minutes south, I would expect a very supportive environment here, and plenty of opportunities for activism. Salem, the state capital, is halfway between Corvallis and Portland, about 45 minutes from each.

U of Oregon, in Eugene, has very strong Marine Bio (but no oceanography major). UofO has a coastal facility as well: https://oimb.uoregon.edu/ Eugene is another hour south and less accessible to Salem and Portland, although still within a 2 hr driving radius. Not sure if Clark Honors would be possible with your stats. This LLC might be of interest, however: LGBTQIA+ Scholars | University Housing
