Sure. It took a lot of effort but I think it was worth it.
He first looked up the appropriate instrument professors at the schools he was applying to, and reached out to them via email asking whether he could talk to them over Zoom or phone. Almost everyone provided useful details, such as who would review his music supplement, which orchestras he would be eligible for, who he would take lessons with, and possible music major/minor advice.
In several cases, we traveled for an in-person lesson to see how well he got along with the professor, as well as for the professor to hear him audition live. That experience helped shape which teachers and schools he was most excited for (although I’m not sure if it had any bearing on his applications).
