Based on your list of large flagships, add a few easier entrants. I saw Michigan State earlier. How about an Arizona State, Arizona, Colorado, UMASS, UMN, Ohio State, Rutgers, etc.
In addition to the mid size, U of Denver, Pitt (a bit larger), RPI, Syracuse, Miami, etc.
For CompSci, CMU is extremely selective and a reach for even the most qualified students. Moreover, CMU has a policy of gender equity for STEM fields, where each class must be 50% male and 50% female, so the competition is even harder for males.
