Chance Me: A Indian Male from Rural Ohio - 4.0 UW, 35 ACT for Data Science/International Relations/PoliSci Major

You should connect with the stars college network. There are some upcoming school webinars that may be very helpful. Aug 6 by Brown & others (Brown’s link) and Aug 20 by Yale & others (Yale’s link) may be of particular interest.

Please don’t wait until RD to apply to Ohio State. Besides missing their deadline for merit, you’ll also be missing the deadline for their cohort programs. These smaller groups really help students connect not only to each other but also to more quickly find resources and opportunities, too. Please consider applying to Morrill and Stamps Eminence.

"It is Stanford policy that you may simultaneously apply to Stanford with a decision plan of Restrictive Early Action and to the following:

  • any public college/university with a non-binding early application plan or early application deadline.
  • any college/university with a non-binding rolling admission process.
  • any foreign college/university with a non-binding application plan on any schedule.
  • any military academy.
  • any college/university with an early deadline for a scholarship or special academic program, as long as:
    1. the decision is non-binding; and
    2. applying early is required in order to be considered for the scholarship or program."

You can add UNC. Though in the reach category it should be easier admit than some of the other schools on your list. I believe they have a school of data science offering both B.A and B.S in Data Science.

Some of the schools on your list might be great for CS, but I wouldn’t necessarily think about for someone interested in political science and international relations.

One school in the “reach for all” category that you might want to consider is Johns Hopkins with about 6k undergrads. It also has a top-notch international relations program, and the size of its CS major (and depth through a doctorate) makes me think that those options would be ample for your interests.

An extremely likely admit that you may want to consider is Seton Hall (6k undergrads) with its School of Diplomacy and International Relations. A likely admit would be Fordham in New York City with about 10k undergrads. Both schools use their proximity to the U.N. and NYC to their advantage.

I’m seconding the recs of U. of Maryland, GW, Tufts, and American, too.

There is plenty of data that shows an advantage for ED apps. Just look at the raw admit rates ED vs RD. At selective schools the rates are 3x, 4x even 5x higher with ED.

The most convincing analysis was done as part of the Harvard litigation. It showed that even when adjusting for factors like legacy, race, athlete, etc early application boosts chances by a lot (odds ratio of 3.79). Read it all here:

A couple quick notes. Harvard had EA, not ED, as those terms are used today. That was also not a fully controlled study of EA as practiced by Harvard.

Sorry, I’m not gonna read a 168 page study that is 6 year old. Agree to disagree, I guess. I’ve seen data that says otherwise.
