Chance me...! also maybe match to closer fit school than Princeton for REA? Phil of Science + Data Science/Statistics [4.0 UW GPA, 1580 SAT, MD resident]

does bama provide an additional stipend on top of covering tcoa?

It’s explained here - some get a Masters. Cood isn’t covered but you get $4k a year which can cover food.

There’s also enrichment to apply for - Randall Research and Blount Scholars.

  • Value of tuition for up to five years or 10 semesters for degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate or law studies
  • Four years of on-campus housing at regular room rate* (based on assignment by Housing and Residential Communities)
  • $4,000/year undergraduate supplemental scholarship for four years**
  • $2,000 one-time allowance for research or international study (after completing one year of undergraduate study at UA)

Whether there is additional money avail, I don’t know. You’d have to ask - ie departmebt monies etc. same with UTD and Tulsaand others like Maine and Wash State that have significant NM awards.

Career outcomes in Philipsphy - Bama showed only 8 grads with 5 showing grad school - 2 at Bama, 2 at UVA, 1 at Rochester. With an NMF, I would think the home school would have the advantage.

No one says you have to use an NMF award but given you have it, you should be aware of the potential financial benefits it can bring.

If you save $400k vs another school - well it might actually be $550k or $600k when you factor in how much, pre tax, you need to net $400k.

yeah i will apply to these as well and some other scholarships that aren’t at the level of like coke scholars i dont think id get that

assuming rea princeton, whats a realistic estimate of my chances?

You’ll need to crunch some numbers & make a guess. The overall admit rate for the Class of 2030 was about 4%. (1892/46618)

The class size is around 1400. Princeton admits 40-50% of the class early that opt to enroll. You could assume that students with higher SAT scores have a better chance than students with lower SAT scores, but you can’t be certain since Princeton doesn’t release this information, but you do know that your scores are in the top 25-35%. 71% of the class relied on financial aid.

Class of 2030 Admission Statistics (9/4/2026)

‘Dream come true’: Early action decisions released for the Class of 2029 (12/16/2024)

Princeton Common Data Set 2025-2026

is financial aid relevant? i thought they were need blind or is full pay taken into account?

i do know that the 75th percntile sat for accepted students who reported was 1560 so i guess that should help. but i feel liek the harder to quantify part is activities and awards

Princeton is need-blind for all undergraduate applicants. However, I wouldn’t expect 100% of the students needing (or not needing) any financial aid next year. Look up trends from the past 5 or 10 years in College Navigator or some other source.

I mean, if you look at domestic applicants it’s about 5%. So maybe you are a hair above. But really that’s not significantly different than your other high reaches. I’m not sure SCEA gets you any lift. @neela1

Truth is you are worried about the wrong thing.

I’d argue P is the least important school on your list. Why ? It’s your top choice. You know you’re applying. Everything you’ve accomplished is so you can have this opportunity.

So your focus is in the wrong place. P is a done deal or should be.

Your focus should be on - if I don’t hit my highest level or I get into a Pitt, is it worth $250k more than a Bama or Tulsa (private school, great rep - used to be where Rice kids that didn’t get in would end up).

While you hope to not need it, your focus should be on the rest of the list and even culling it down. You know you’ll get into UMD and Pitt, so should UIUC or Michigan be on the table ? What if you get into UMD but Svholars, not Honors - which is very possible or don’t get Honors at Pitt, another possibility, how does that change things? Do you even know what Honors entails - that has different requirements/commitments at different schools.

You have a top school. This isn’t a game so unless the money aspect matters, move on. Apply. If you don’t get in, their loss. But then where, then where after that. Spend time to build your list and find that definite, if I got shot down everywhere but got in here, I’d still be happy. Even if you SCEA P and get in and change your mind, no harm - you still can.

Truth is there are kids your equal or close to it at pretty much every state flagship - at some more than others. You will be successful because you’re a stud. Going to UMD or Bama vs your super reaches doesn’t change that.

You should only apply ED to a school if it is clearly your top choice. Do not apply ED to a school that is not your top choice just in an attempt to play an admissions game.

You are a very competitive applicant for every school on your list. I expect you to have some very good choices available, and possibly a tough decision to make come April. Other than UMD I am hard pressed to predict which other schools you are likely to get accepted to.

Also, do not underestimate how good UMD is.

One nice thing about SCEA at Princeton is that you still get to find out whether or not you will get accepted to other schools.

Also, your list is very long. You really should trim it. Leave at least two safeties on your list. Leave your top 3 preferred schools on your list. Think about whether all of the other schools actually make sense even to apply to. As one example, it is going to be very tough to do a good job at putting together this many applications and this many essays. Cutting the list in half (more or less) might be reasonable.

You can have a good career with a degree in mathematics / mathematical modeling (or Statistics or Data Science).

You might want to assume that somewhere around about 80% of applicants are qualified to attend, and you are clearly in that 80%. Past that it is very hard to judge. These schools are looking for students who are a good fit for them. If this comes across in your essays, it is likely to improve your chances a bit.

Best wishes. I think that you are likely to do very well regardless of which school you end up attending for your bachelor’s degree.

Helpful Tips from Princeton Admissions

yeah ive looked a lot at honors college at maryland id be much less likely to go if i didn’t get in to that. i think uiuc would be tough to decide if i also got into honors college because they have really good cs and job placement if i recall correctly. i wouldn’t be disappointed going to maryland i know a lot of people from my program go there even with ivy acceptances and then either do grad school or med school at a top 5 for their field anyways. its definitely something i would heavily consider if offered any sort of scholarship and in the honors college

i do think i will trim a couple off of here. im focusing heavily on my supps for 8 schools where i think theyre some of biggest reaches and have pretty reusable prompts i think im going to have really well tailored supps for yale, princeton, stanford, caltech, mit, uc berkeley, upenn, and duke and then some other schools i might take off if it ends up being too much work to get a good supplemental for them.

i was also thinking of majoring in applied math because i’ve heard a lot of advice about the importance of the theoretical side of data sci/cs.

thank you!

Very hard to say whether scea gets any benefit. Maybe a tiny bit.

I heard that the real number of qualified candidates are about 3X the number of offers at a place like P. So if you are qualified in some generic sense, your odds are about a third. And then going from 3 to 1 is a fit issue — love of learning, interest in the liberal arts / humanities, not a pre professional mind set etc.

There is no stats or data science major at P. The closest is ORFE. Not math.

The nature of the kids who go to P vs H or S is somewhat different, even though some kids get into both places. This is self selection by candidates based on fit. Princeton can be a more nerdy place than Harvard. Kids are less mercenary than at Stanford. Interestingly at our school, kids preferred Yale over H etc.. people have nuanced opinions about all these things.

Just an fyi, at UIUC, CS is a closed major, meaning there is no way to transfer in to it if you are not directly admitted. UIUC admits by major so if you want CS there, list it as your first choice major. The acceptance rate is around 4%.

yeah my plan for princeton is to apply philosophy as my primary major and on the common app it also asks for a minor/secondary area of study and im putting statistics/machina learning there.

i was considering ORFE but I did hear it was very competitive

yeah only one person in my program is rea harvard and none stanford theres around 7ish reaing princeton and yale each

You didn’t list CS as a major.
