Yeah, but I don’t think my parents are going to do something like that. They’ll just be blunt with me. I’m starting to realize the options I have.
Yep, I’ll read that on the weekend.
Sorry for the late responses everyone, just took a break.
NJ CCs often offer honors programs because some top students choose then due to NJ Stars and they want to offer enrichment etc.
Not all do but those which do offer it to their stronger students, those aiming to transfer to Rutgers and other 4-year universities.
My CC does have a honors program (MCC for me). A few even transfer to ivys. I’m going to check it out
Would this type of policy help?
Can tour parents run the NPC on this?
Please note that this is a high reach, but once you’ve assured NJ publics, Rutgers (with all the honors colleges to get as many scholarships as possible), SUNY Buffalo (in case of scholarships), AND your CC and its honors program, you can try for the cherry on the cake, the Hail Mary admission that’d be affordable (without parental loans).
I will on saturday thank you ![]()
There’s others like this too - Emory, Rice, etc. and more. Lehigh too I think to be closer. I just looked though - Lehigh you need to be under $75K to have free tuition.
I do not see this student getting merit from Rutgers NB.
I know… but considering the financial parameters, it seems worth it for him to apply to any merit opportunity he can apply to ar each college (bc it typically yields the best ROI).
My guess is that he’d get merit at Rowan but not sure it’d be enough to equal commuting to Rutgers without a scholarship. But taking all the steps would ensure he could compare (and no regrets).
OP, did your parents originally say that they had funds for college but now they do not?
If so, I understand that their finances may have changed, or maybe they simply didn’t realize how expensive college is. However, because I have heard of others with the following misconception, i am wondering if they are under the mistaken impression that if they refuse to pay, then the colleges will give you more. If there is any chance of this, it might be good to have a conversation about this, because except for extremely rare circumstances that simply isn’t true.
Also, are they willing to fill out the FAFSA for you (or provide you the data so you can do it for them? That will be necessary for you to get any need-based financial aid or for you to qualify for federal student loans.
I think it was the typical - it’ll get handled kind of thing - from talking to OP in PM.
It’s why it’s so important to have these deep conversations up front.
Nope, they never saved up for anything. They just want me to take loans, and hope that I figure out something for med school!
Oh I’m so sorry to hear that.
If you really want med school or another health-care related career, then I agree with the many other posters to go for the least expensive undergraduate college you can find so that it doesn’t impact your ability to pay for medical school or PA school or a nursing program.
I’m so sorry ![]()
They may “want you to take loans” to pay for college but you can’t. You can take on 5.5k in federal loans, that’s it. No bank will loan you 100k (25k*4), the minimum you need for Rutgers. Anything besides the 5.5k, THEY would have to take on your behalf and since you wouldn’t be out of college+med school for 12 years THEY would have to pay those loans back.
It makes a lot more financial sense for them to save whatever they can and use that money now, for 4 years, rather than having to pay for the next 10 years.
That being said, aiming for PA school or BSN+NP might be a safer, more direct path to a health care profession.
I would take a look at CCs that you can commute to and that also have RN programs.
Thank you, but I think there’s a bit of confusion (not that it changes much). My parents are willing to take out loans but they would want me to pay them back.
But I don’t think they understand the process well, and whenever I mention it to them, lets just say its not the most polite response.
Honestly, i dont even know why I’m applying to most of this schools, and bsmd programs. I cant even pay for most.

A loan in their name is their responsibility.

How would you pay it back. Kids typically don’t make enough to cover their expenses or barely do so. At $100k, you are talking $1300 a month for ten years. How will you pay that? Answer - you likely won’t.
And if you are in further schooling, you’ll be building a bigger balance.
Borrowing $100k for college is nothing short of criminal - even for Harvard.
You need to sit your parents down for a chat, tell them you are not paying the loans, show them the thread and have a real conversation developing a real plan. You are 1 of 6. They need to get ahead of this now.
The more I read, the more I think working while attending a CC should be one option to consider. You can take out the student loan that is offered ($5500?) while working to pay the rest. You can attend school part time if necessary. Is it ideal? No, but it is a start in the right direction. Choose a school where you can become a nurse (rn), x-ray tech, or certified phlebotomist.
There are also other programs where you can get trained to be a phlebotomist or an EMT. Once you get your training you can work and begin to save money.
Having your parents take out loans with the expectation that you will pay them back is a poor choice, imo. It’s too much money, and how would this work with your siblings? If they attend college would your parents do the same for them?
I know somebody who started medical school at the age of 40, so your dream does not have to end. It does, however, need to be revised.
There are options. Your parents might not like them, but I don’t see them as having a choice.
Good luck!
If you are interest in a health care related field, you might want to read this. There are a LOT of health related careers that are not doctor…or nurse, or PA or APRN.
