Even then. They’ll see it. They will just ignore it.
What would I have to do with it then?
Yes. $19,000 a year.
Ok, now we are getting somewhere on the budget question! But you said your parents are not prepared to pay this? How do you propose to find the money? You need proof of funding to get a student visa.
As in, my parents have 4 children.
I see.
This is what they can pay a year? Or this is their total income?
Is this US $ or Canadian $?
What they can pay per year.
But you said they will pay noting.
If that’s $19K Canadian, it’s like $14K US.
If it’s $19K US, then I recommend for sure (if you want to be here):
Washington & Lee - you MUST apply today - for a chance at the full - ride merit scholarship - called the Johnson. They meet need for international (need blind) regardless but the Johnson is free.
They give to 10% of the class - so 40+ kids each year and they have engineering. It’s not ABET accredited but going home after, it may not matter.
And as I mentioned, of all the publics, Alabama is the one I know keeps merit the same for intl where most schools give less - so that’d put you mid-20s - maybe an on campus job ban help there. They have an aero major.
You can focus on Stanford and MIT after - but the Johnson is one you should do and you must do today - and yes, it has an essay beyond the common app essay.
It’s still unlikely but has 44 slots they’ll fill with this scholarship - so that’s 44 better chances than Harvard or Stanford taking you - and here in the US, it’s a fantastic name - and per parents on this board, their career placement is top shelf.
Almost as if I’m cursed for not being born in the US.
And yet many here would say they are cursed for not being Canadians. In fact, some Americans put Canadian flags on their back packs when traveling.
Seems to me Canada has a great university system.
Aerospace engineers - no one cares where you go.
And you are Canadian - be proud.
btw - if you lived here, you still couldn’t afford the schools if your parents won’t pay. That has nothing to do with being international. Colleges expect parents to pay. Many “top” schools here have more full pay than people getting discounts or aid.
Get the W&L app in - don’t be foolish and don’t “what if”.
You weren’t getting into Harvard or Stanford with a 1460 no matter where you were born. I mean, I can’t say for sure - but I’d make the same comment to an American.
Why? There are thousands of students in the US who can’t afford these schools, or any schools. Many of us would love to have more affordable options like other countries.
I could take part in the Questbridge Scholarship if I were a US-citizen.
If your family can pay $19K, not even close.
And stop - you’re not American… make a plan for today.
W&L is a QB school so get your Johnson in now. It’s like you’d win QB if they admit you and you win the Johnson.
You’re not cursed. You have a number of excellent universities in your home country with (as I understand) government-supported options for paying for them. This puts you ahead of literally billions of people in the world.
If your desire for a US degree is overwhelming, you can do what many others have done: undergrad in home country, do very well, get a funded grad school placement in the US afterwards.
Doubtful, if the NPC came up at $19K
To paraphrase from Bette Davis in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane: But you aren’t, Blanche! You aren’t a US citizen!
And plenty of Americans wish they were Canadian, but we all play the hand we’re dealt.
How about for ECs and awards?
Please shift your focus to the many wonderful options that you will have in Canada. Does your family have Canadian citizenship? Will you qualify for the provincial rate ? Or the Canadian citizen rate?
Shoulda, woulda, coulda. You are grasping at straws. The US university system is a very capitalistic system. You pay to play. A number of my neighbors cannot afford to put their kids through school at these prices.
They find other options.
I’m so sorry this is a blow to what you pictured in your mind as your future but you didn’t ask anyone and that’s why you’re extremely disappointed.
My son-in-law is Canadian. He’s from Kitchener. He met my daughter while she was on a visit to Canada. He attended Waterloo. He has a phenomenal résumé but that stopped cold during Covid. So he’s reshuffled a bit and will be returning to school here. He’s now a US citizen because he married our daughter. He waited two years to start receiving visa and American documentation.
He had no inkling that he would ever be a US citizen. He loves Canada and everything Canadian so he finds that it’s a fluke that he’s now a US citizen.
So if you want to meet some American women, I suggest you start visiting the University of Buffalo. Lots of women there; lots of them are American. That’s the only other option I see for you since you’re trying to desperately get into the US. It’ll take time and lots of money.
