General Comments:

Applying to College of Arts and Sciences

Retake ACT in October and make sure your essays address your fit for Cornell. Chances look good to me, although one never knows.

I think you have a good chance  (competitive prep school does make a huge difference in my opinion).

Please take the time to chance me: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1663849-chance-me.html#latest</a>

Overall chances look OK, but so are 80% of applicants’. Highly recommend you to retake ACT (not sure if they superscore ACT) in the fall and maybe a subject test to >750. Arts and Sciences receives the most applications out of any of Cornell’s colleges and with the recent uptrends in apps the past few years, test scores are going to count more than ever. Your ECs are diverse, but definitely focus on your most passionate interests or intended major in your essays because those will carry a lot of weight especially since you have no known hooks…hope this helps!

I think your SAT IIs are fine (I got into Arts and Sciences with much worse subject test scores) so I think you should focus your attention on retaking the ACT. Is there any particular reason you didn’t take the SAT? You may want to consider doing so.

@Ranza123‌ I did also take the sat but my score was only a 1250/1910. @boester22 @renomamma it says on the website that the average act score is a 31. so what you all are saying I should try getting into the higher percentiles to make my application more competitive?

You want to shoot for above the average, since those scores include those with hooks, such as URMs, athletes, etc who might have lower scores. Just my opinion.

The mid-range ACT score is 30-34, which means 25% of people accepted scored below a 30 and 25% scored above a 34. Getting above a 31 would definitely make you more competitive. Also keep in mind that this score range is for all of the colleges within Cornell. Some of the colleges are much less competitive and some focus more on ECs than test scores, so the lower ACT scores are usually associated with these colleges. For arts and sciences, you should try to get the highest scores you can.

@studyhard1 The median ACT score (32) is much more indicative of what you should be shooting for as opposed to the mean. The average is easily influenced by outliers (as mentioned by Renomamma and Ranza123) so a 31 would still place you in the lower half of the class
