Yeah, like the title of the post, he seems to be inclined in CS and Computer Engineering.
He has done “Introduction to Engineering” class where he had to build circuits using Arduino and he enjoyed it thoroughly. Similarly, he enjoys coding as well.
I am a Computer engineer myself and we have talked often on what it entails. We have also talked about options on how he can take Computer engineering as major with elective courses in CS/Data Science and AI, making him a very strong computer engineer. Today all chip design companies are looking for these skills for Designing and Verification jobs. So that would be an option to pursue, but need to carefully choose which colleges to apply for Computer engineering vs CS.
Here’s my opinion as a programmer. The Univ of Oregon is a well recruited reputable school for CS. Plus, if he can get into the honors program, that would be a tangible accomplishment he can put on a resume.
Don’t disagree UO is a fine school but if the student wanted flexibility to CE vs. CS, only Oregon State and Portland State would be in-state options. UO doesn’t have CE, only CS and Data Science.
Thanks to everyone for your insights and opinions.
We will look more into the points suggested above and ask more questions as we prepare our application.
It certainly is easy to stress about it, but the reality is that his success cake is already baked. He’ll do well no matter where he lands. He’s curious, intelligent and has a strong work ethic. Enjoy the ride!
Language is revealing and influential. As parents, our roles are supportive. It is not “our” application. It is theirs.
Agree. Some of the colleges like UW-Seattle stress that there is no difference in admit rates between the two majors as they are housed in the same department. Some like Wisconsin have the two majors (CS/CE) in separate schools with secondary admission for one of the majors.
