Chance me for NC schools - UNC, NC State, UNCW [NC resident, 3.83 UW, 30 ACT, Marine Sciences]

i actually applied to nc state with a different major other than marine sciences, i did wildlife, conservation, and fisheries biology, with marine sciences being my second choice. i liked the option of more conservation opportunities in the major and it’s different. i have to see if the major is enough to make it the school i go to hahaha

At many schools, students can apply to the honors program once they are there and have achieved the required GPA. One advantage to this is that it gives them time to research what the honors program is all about, as well as speak to students who are in it - and ultimately decide whether the program is really worth it to them. Different schools have different requirements for their honors programs, such as having to complete additional coursework, and some students decide they don’t want to take on that extra requirement.

Great advice. Some kids just want Honors because they think it puts them at a different level. But not all Honors programs are the same - you may fit with one but not another.

It’s likely not going to matter career wise.

I feel like we’re co-opting internetmia’s thread here. But yes, we’re aware that not all honors programs are alike, and she is definitely not in it for the prestige. She only applied to two honors programs because she determined that for various reasons, the other programs were not, in fact, worth it to her. The UNCW program is nice because it offers smaller class sizes and more opportunities for faculty interaction. I was thrilled and she was worried about the requirement for an honors thesis, and that is the main reason I think she’ll be okay if she isn’t selected.
