yes, i was just thinking of writing about the health issue in the additional info section. i was planning on making it short and factual, as i don’t want it to come off as a sob story.
ok thanks
I wouldn’t doubt this could impact grades too - and no one is minimizing your situation - but just saying it would be hard for a school to account.
Anytime someone says my grades dropped because of x or y, I get wary. Truth is, you don’t now why you got the grades you got but everyone worries about a B or C. People should worry about learning, moreso than grades.
Nova is a tough admit. Try and see. If someone gets turned down and most will, they’ll never know why.
I’m more concerned with your ED status and budget. You need to start there. If your folks are unwilling to pay $88K and don’t qualify for aid, signing a contract saying they will pay $88K is a big problem.
Best of luck - and let us know how it goes.
Did you ED1 anywhere?
What is it about Villanova that you love so much - just curious?
We are solidly middle class here in NJ, 5 kids, 1 income, daughter was accepted to Villanova honors. I really don’t know why she applied, we didn’t receive FA and there is no way we could afford to pay. If you need aid, don’t apply ED, because that means you will accept being full pay if not eligible for FA.
That’s good advice for sure on being sure on $$ before applying ED. Just wanted to add that Villanova does give substantial financial aid to lots of middle income families. It’s certainly not the most generous - currently meets only 83 percent of need. So not sure what your specific situation is and I’m sorry it didn’t work out. According to CDS 65 percent of those who applied for aid received it and 35 percent did not. The vast majority of those who got aid received very substantial grants (average grant $52k). I am certain most of these folks are middle income…but I guess we all have different definitions of that and all kinds of factors can affect aid…home equity, owning a business, etc. Wishing the best for all.
It most likely is the fact that I’m using what is considered middle class here in northeast NJ (and we are at the top), since the OP is from Long Island with a similar COL. I know many here who were surprised at not getting offered financial aid, because although they might be struggling a bit financially, the salaries are higher, and of course COL doesn’t factor in with aid.
Yes! I’m sure you’re right about that. When I went to college a million years ago, aid was scarce for lower middle income families like mine. That situation has improved dramatically, especially at ivies and a lot of other tippy - top schools with huge endowments. Even at those schools, and especially at a school like Villanova which is very selective but has a per student endowment far below the top tier…families with very upper middle class incomes (say $200-$300K+) are really squeezed out. They have become a lot more generous for lower and middle “middle class” families who make, say, $75-$150K. But still can be very unaffordable for families who make more than that but aren’t “wealthy”. And with 5 kids! I mean those things are expensive.
@bruno99 OP intimates they won’t qualify for need aid. but the parents have set a floor. See my interaction with the student on Posts 11, 13.
hi
- yes lol my parents are ok with paying for it, but if we qualify for some aid, ofc we will take it
- i haven’t submitted anything yet- i did ed 1 to NYU and am waiting to hear back thursday. even tho i am expecting a rejection i know ill end up where i need to be!
- i really just like location and the vibe of the school. from what i’ve heard when i talked to friends, there is a great balance of social life and studying. also, there are some good sports programs to watch! also, a majority if schools i applied to are in PA. i wanted to stay under a four ish hour car ride from home and a school that is a bit more competitive if possible. i also don’t like massachusets at all, which resulted in most of my options being in state (NY), NJ, or PA

OK - that’s different.
You said earlier - “Needs some aid not full price tho”. “i meant that i could pay the full price, i just need a little bit of aid.”
When I said, it sounds like you’re full pay but your parents set a limit, you said - you explained what I meant.
Now you are saying “yes lol my parents are ok with paying for it, but if we qualify for some aid, ofc we will take it” - which is very different.
Assuming you are full pay, assume early on very high 80s and more than that the final 3 years.
If they’re not ok with that, you can apply but not ED - because the likelihood of merit isn’t great but in ED, it’s likely near none - because why give you a nickel if you are bound. And Nova is very upfront about not needing aid. Frankly, unless I was full pay and willing to pay, it’s not a school I would ED to. But again, your parents can fill out the NPC.
If you liked NYU and the city part, Nova isn’t. Have you considered GW or even a College of Charleston which has an excellent Poli Sci program. it’s only 9k kids but it’s uber urban….as is GW. Charleston isn’t four hours but a short flight.
Define competitive - in most cases, selectivity matters little. Did you watch the key players from the Trump Jan 6th trial - Christopher Newport and Kent State. My kid had 7 intern offers in DC from Charleston.
Are you interested in diplomacy. Have you checked Seton Hall, catholic and strong in hoops like Nova. They have a highly regarded school of Diplomacy.
Lehigh, too, is well regarded in the area. And Syracuse Maxwell - one of the tops in Poli Sci….in fact, if you go to the next level, Public Admin (grad school), it and Indiana are routinely 1-2.
None of that matters….but there are others.
I don’t see Nova like NYU at all - but that’s me.
Good luck.
School of Diplomacy and International Relations - Seton Hall University
i know that nova isn’t in philly. yea nova isn’t really like nyu i just like both schools for some reason. i am applying to both lehigh and syracuse rd. unfortunately none of the other suggestions are ideal schools for me, but ty!
Neither Syracuse nor GW meet full need, similar to Villanova. All three were on my kid’s list two years ago. OP will get no merit from Nova regardless of ED. GW would be little to none. Not sure on Syracuse but most people I know who go there got very little or no merit. That might be ok because OP doesn’t seem that driven by cost TBH. Would likely get merit at Seton Hall. Wasn’t on our list because I heard it’s a suitcase school and that the area was not very exciting but to be fair we never visited. But they do have renowned diplomacy and IR and it should be an easy admit.
Totally fair. My guess is Lehigh doesn’t happen. GW and SU could given full pay.
That said, SU does seem to be struggling despite renowned programs at Newhouse and Maxwell. A recent article showed discounts at 40% with some late low ball offers to those who hadn’t committed. So perhaps OP can squeeze in.
Easier/assured admits and solid would be Ithaca (upstate NY with big merit), URI and UNH but OP doesn’t like that direction toward Mass). A home run in Poli Sci or Pub Affairs/Policy - not private but would be UDel and the Biden School if Pub Affairs vs Poli Sci which is in a different college. Not sure of app deadlines.
OP said they have safeties so that’s good. Perhaps they’ve got some SUNY’s like New Paltz or Albany etc.
Have you looked at American University in DC? Or Catholic in DC?
i don’t really like the dc area sadly
