Idk why I realized that its literally Saturday I submitted both wnl and wesleyan at the same time right after the other on the 1st, and on the common app wnl stated that IDs would be given out 24hrs after application so that was why I was worried but they were probably still off work that 1st and now on weekend break so my bad
The campus is on holiday December 17 (students left by the 14th) - January 6. While some employees are working during that time, many are on vacation. So that’s why I mentioned typical response times may be slower so you wouldn’t be concerned.
W&L is a better choice because of your financial need.
Admission rates mean nothing for internationals with high financial need - the main criterion is how much need do you have and if your need is very high your odds are better at colleges with a very big budget. In that regard, W&L >>> Clark.
Clark is a very good school but they’re not as wealthy.
You won’t hear back till Monday. Pretty much all colleges offices were off Dec 23-Jan 6, at least for any outside-facing roles (some might have had internal meetings on Friday but normal operations would resume on Monday).
Actually, you weren’t being stupid at all. U.S. citizens are eligible for government backed student loans and they are taken out in the name of the student. That is probably where you got the idea. However, in most cases, internationals are not eligible for those loans and frankly, the colleges you are interested in have been gradually replacing them with grants in their efc packages instead.
In any event, that should all come out in the wash once you get accepted. Wishing you the best of luck.
Yep! I got the email at 8:20 this morning (2am EST ) so that’s good. Now I’m waiting on Sweet Briar to answer an email I sent about a month ago, thank you!
Hi! So, should I go test optional for Bryn Mawr?? I know 1280 is low but according to Niche, Bryn Mawr has an average SAT score of 1280-1520, but then according to College Simply The middle fifty percent of incoming students have SAT composite scores ranging from 1280 to 1495. The 75th percentile score is 1495 while the 25th percentile score is 1280. So I’m really not sure, my score is low but I think apart from my GPA and transcripts (no APs and all of that), its the only form of testing I have.
Also Oberlin, I wanted to apply (someone recommended it on here) and now I’m looking at their stats and it says International Applicants who can contribute at least 35k USD are considered the most competitive for admission, huh??? 35k is insane even for domestic applicants wydm for internationals
I was thinking if I wasn’t going to apply, I could swap it out for Barry or Grambling Uni (low tuition and one is a(n) HBCU).
Some years ago, Howard did offer scholarships up to full rides that international students were eligible for. More recently, an international student reported getting a full ride at Fisk.
But it is best to ask directly each school whether international students are eligible for full ride scholarships, if not clearly stated on the web site.
And ask whether the full ride is open to test optional international applicants or if a test score must be submitted.
Bryn Mawr test score: roll the dice. The odds of it being beneficial (providing an external evaluation of your math and English ability to take that test compared to others in English speaking Western Africa) vs detrimental (because they’re need aware and may keep their very few full scholarships for higher scores) are about even and likely a matter of a variable you can’t control for - luck.
Actually $35,000 is less than the cost of attendance at many instate public flagships in the U.S. Many students would be thrilled to have an acceptance to Oberlin with a net cost of $35,000.
If the test fee for another SAT is an insurmountable burden for your parent, then the only way for you is a full ride. A yearly cost of 35k vs 65k vs 90k is all pie in the sky. No US lender will lend to you or your parent. As an international seeking a full ride, your qualifications would need to be extraordinary compared to those of most of the students attending there. So you really should not submit that SAT score to any school where it is not at the top of the range for that school, and unfortunately, schools of that level of selectivity are very unlikely to offer a full ride.
I am hoping for your sake that you find a school which will offer you a full ride. But you need to simultaneously make alternative plans for next september. The best option in the US for a 15 yr old international with a hard data point of a 1280 SAT, seeking a full ride to a selective college, is 10th or at most 11th grade at a high school that offers honors and AP classes. You have relatives in the US with whom you can live. Unless there is a way for you to start at a good college in your country, then I would urge you to, after your applications are in, start exploring the option of high school in the US.
Would’ve applied to Fisk but it states on their website that they require all transcripts to be evaluated at the expense of the student
I guess contacting them about the transcript thing wouldn’t be too bad of an idea, and then if they say exceptions can be made I’ll ask them about the scholarship thing. Thank you!
I think my SAT score is in Fisk’s range. I checked some time back and I remember that transcript evaluation thing was the only thing really making me choose Sweet Briar over it for my “wasted” app, but I’ll check cuz my memory might be bad
I guess I do have to roll the dice. The only thing that worries me is other applicants (granted the only ones i know are all in their 2nd and 3rd year in uni) but they have 1400s. I haven’t heard anyone applying here so far so I kinda want to gatekeep it as selfish as that sounds. Also, there was this other girl that did her A Levels in the UK and took 2 APs but she’s applying as a Nigerian student (and I think is in a Nigerian uni right now). Its just one student but it’ll help me explain what I’m afraid of- I don’t want to be compared with applicants like her. She’s stellar obviously, but I really really hope that colleges don’t go comparing applicants like her and applicants like me because we are from the same country, like I’m hoping that thing that they say that’s along the lines of we judge applicants based on the context of your environment or something is true and not just on paper. Obviously the college application process isn’t based on what I want to happen or what I’m hoping for, but I know applicants like that exist so if anyone has substantial proof that that’s not how things are run and that colleges really judge based on different situation and context, it’ll be very much appreciated if you could share it with me just to make me feel a tad bit better (even tho it wouldn’t change anything right now). Thank you!
