One school that you may want to consider is Kutztown in Pennsylvania. It has about 6300 undergrads and might not be that different from SUNYs in cost for you (tuition a bit higher but room & board a bit less). @Mashinations visited it last year and had positive things to say about the school (you can read some of the comments here). It has popular English and history majors, but it’s also one of the few schools in the country to offer a bachelor’s in library science, with two different tracks (one leading to a school media specialist and the other not).
With your interest in archival work, you may also want to look at public history programs. Saint Vincent (PA, 1300 undergrads ) has a public history major that requires a senior capstone project, while Siena (NY, 3500 undergrads) has a certificate in public history (and other cool history options) that requires an internship.
I suspect that all three schools would be likely admits for you.
