Schools
(List of colleges by your initial chance estimate; designate if applying ED/EA/RD; if unsure, leave them unclassified)

Purdue University- Health Sciences pre med or biochem (legacy)

UCincy- BSMD??, pre-med BSMD is reach, pre-med likely?

U Miami- biochem likely but reach on cost

U Wisconsin- Madison

UCO Boulder

Tulane

UGA

Clemson

UFL

Michigan

Notre Dame

IU- Bloomington

Miami of Ohio

Vanderbilt

I know some of these are a real reach academically as much as financially but looking for opinions where to set expectations ( most of them I just don’t know what to think) and, of course, options I’ve overlooked would be good.

If a scholarship is necessary for affordability, indicate that you are aiming for a scholarship and use the scholarship chance to estimate it into the appropriate group below; also, for colleges that admit by major or division, consider that in chance estimate.

  • Assured (100% chance of admission and affordability):

  • Low Probability:

You go to private. Talk to your school counselor.

So first off - you have $35k a year. So you need to build a list for $35k.

So here’s my thoughts -

Purdue - in

Miami - run NPC bit remove - if full pay will be $70k plus I don’t think you get in anyway - ie reach

U Cincy - in but check NPC. If not $35k, no reason to apply. I expect it will be.

Wisconsin - reach and remove on cost

CU Boulder - in but remove on cost

Tulane - reach / remove cost

UGA - reach, likely remove cost

Clemson - low reach, remove cost

Florida - reach / remove cost

Michigan - reach / remove cost

Notre Dame - reach / remove cost

Vandy - yes / unlikely cost

IU - yes

Vandy - reach / remove cost

Terrible list. Sorry. When you have a budget you need to bo build for cost. You picked names but have no way to pay for them.

So you have IU for sure, Purdue highly likely and U Cincy I think. Miami Ohio worth a shot but unlikely.

Look at other flagships - WVU, U Kansas, Alabama (assuredly gets you there financially with pad), Miss State etc if want more options or more in state like Ball State. Also schools like New Mexico, Tennessee Tech, Tennessee Chattanooga etc.

But your list has a lot of time wasting and effort in it.

If you are thinking pre med, check out Alabama and the McCullough Program.

I agree that you need a new list, both in terms of cost and acceptance.

Your in-state schools should be on the list. It also looks like your state participates in a Midwest tuition match program (is that still true?). I would look into that.

I agree about schools such as Alabama and WVU, noted above.

Thanks for the new suggestions. My mom has kinda told me the same thing on the expensive ones bc the essays take time and even the cost of the apps is a lot if its not a reality. I do know that Miami OH and Ucincy typically offer incentives a lot of times equal to in state tuition for IN students, though

If the University of Cincinnati offers a tuition match, I would absolutely keep it on the list.

I don’t know Miami does. It has merit. U can try.

In the end for most majors - a flagship is a flagship. U Colorado and Wisconsin are great schools. But are they going to deliver differently than IU or Alabama or Ball State given your field. I don’t think so.

My list wasn’t exhaustive but some to look at. SUNY has free app week this week. Maybe a Buffalo and Bing are worth applying to see.

@twogirls nited the Midwest Student Exchange. Flagships include Nebraska, Kansas and North Dakota and other fine schools like Truman State.

Good luck

In state a tad over $35k. Great school.

These you’ll get into but make sure to apply by their earliest deadline and apply to their Honors and any other special program&fellowship otherwise you may not be within budget.
I’m not sure Purdue will be possible financially but since you’re a legacy and you have a shot at admission I get why you and your parents would want to apply
BSMD is impossible to predict since they use other factors than just admissions but take your shot.
Would you apply for Biology/Biomedical science, Biochemistry, or Neuroscience ?
The Cincinnatus scholarship would likely make UCincinnati possible and may be your best bet. :crossed_fingers:

I assume your college adviser has already checked your application to Hutton.

None of these will be within budget. Their base costs are 55-90k and if you don’t qualify for any aid your full budget is 35k from your parents, 5.5k in federal loans, and whatever you’re earning at a part time job so anything above 45k is out of budget.

Instead, consider: Pitt (if you apply very soon since they’re first come first served for admissions to competitive majors); St Olaf (if you show interest); Kalamazoo; Muhlenberg. These three offer merit aid and your stats would make you a good candidate. They’re different from each other but would definitely bring something different and potentially of value to a premed compared to Indiana University (smaller classes, more personal contact with professors, etc.)

Notre Dame
I see you have Notre Dame, where you may have a shot academically but they offer very very few merit scholarships so odds are very low it’d be within budget… Are you also applying to St Mary’s? What about UDayton, UScranton, St Joe’s in Philadelphia, Xavier in Cincinnati, Loyola Chicago, Loyola Maryland, Loyola LA?

Seconding an application to SUNYs since the app is free!
Binghamton in particular but Buffalo, Albany, New Paltz, Geneseo more likely to offer scholarships or meet your price point.

Our daughter attended Buffalo, intending to become a physician, but switched majors to engineering and has done extremely well, which had a LOT to do with her preparation there. They gave her a merit scholarship. She dealt with the snow very well. It was very new to her because we reside in Southern California. Not too many people go from SoCal to UB, but UB has aligned medical school!

D25 had a similar profile to you and got into IU Bloomington and Purdue (in state). Purdue will probably offer you one of their merit scholarships and IU will too. Even if you get no scholarships, both come in under your budget. IU has many more department scholarships open to incoming freshman too.

Bulter University in Indianapolis would more than likely come in under budget too. They give generous merit.

You could also look at Saint Mary’s (Notre Dame’s sister school) They give generous merit. They shared last year that they have MCAT tutoring and that students who maintained a minimum GPA (can’t remember specifics) have a high percent get into medical school.

The University at Albany, one of the 4 R1 research campuses in NY’s state university system (SUNY) will only charge you what you would pay at your in state flagship. So, in your case there would be no out of state tuition cost, rather the cost would be the same as what you would pay in state at IU-Bloomington.
