The D grade will disqualify that semester from counting toward the 4 years (8 semesters) of English required by UC, CSU, and other colleges that list that as a hard requirement. It will also likely leave a bad impression to an admission reader at a highly selective college.
@gumbymom would you mind clarifying the use of the SAT and/or AP scores for satisfying this English requirement for the CA public universities?
The use of test scores or college courses to fulfill a-g requirements for UC is detailed here: Subject requirement (A-G) | UC Admissions
@ucbalumnus linked the information for alternate ways to fulfill the requirement.
SAT Writing and Language Test
Score of 31 meets the first three years; score of 36 meets the entire four-year requirement.
Is there an SAT score that would meet this requirementâŠor just the writing score!
Thatâs the ACT scale?
@Gumbymom has stated that the student satisfies the requirement with their AP score and SAT score. But the D grade will still appear on their transcript.
I did not think the SAT even had a writing test anymore!
Here is what the above says.

ACT English Language Arts (ELA)
Score of 24 meets the first three years; score of 30 meets the entire four-year requirement.

SAT Writing and Language Test Scoring: Students receive a Writing and Language Test score of 10-40
Itâs not separate. The relevant score is apparently shown on the SAT report, see this example from the college board - this is under the âtest scoresâ part of it
