Chance Me: Mechanical Engineering Major 3.565 UW, 1170 SAT, 25 ACT, NJ resident

If you look at some of my responses, you could get an idea of why I placed the schools there, since it was accidental rather than intentional. Also, I think I remember you replying to my post a few months ago about the financial aspect of my college list, and I really can’t discuss that part without seeing net calculators or without knowing my mother’s income. However, I know that it’s above 65k but maybe below 80k, so clearly the financial aspect of this process is pretty confusing to me without enough knowledge of her income. For now, I need to make a list of schools I can apply to and have a chance of getting accepted into, and then sit down and discuss with both my mom and my CBO counselor about financial packages and all that stuff. I feel like I discussed the math part somewhere in this reply section already, but I am aware that I may not seem like I am cut out for engineering. Also, I honestly made my college list based on colleges that my CBO counselor suggested, so I assume that she thinks I have a chance for some of the likelies (excluding MIT), considering how I am still taking 3 more standardized tests and the data we saw on many released common data sets. Additionally, I got waitlisted from the Union College fly-in program, maybe because I am doing a virtual interview with them today, but I think that may be a good sign? (idk, but let me know what you think about it?) Also, I have been showing demonstrated interest in Olin, and I’m waiting for the fly-in decision to be released sometime in October. I went to an optional interview for Olin, and it went very well, since he said he would put in a good word for me. Anyways, just tell me what you think about all of this and if it even makes a difference.

Thanks, I forgot to add Rowan since it seems like a good school that I can attend without worrying too much about the tuition. Also, I really just put the schools in all the categories to use them all up, since I kind of rushed when making it. Obviously, none of these schools are likely, and definitely not assured, so that was a mistake on my part. Again, I suggested taking off schools like CMU to my CBO counselor, but she believed that I had a slim chance of getting in based on the 25-26 common data set released by the school. She also suggested RPI and Lafayette, which were schools I didn’t see myself getting into as well. I guess she just tries to have a more positive outlook on things, but I really don’t know if this list is realistic–especially after seeing all of these responses.

Also, just curious whether this website has admissions officers or retired ones? Where do you guys get this information or general understanding from?

From Terms of Service

College Professionals. Some of our members may be admissions officials, administrators, or faculty at a college or university. Occasionally, a member may falsely claim to hold such a position. To protect our student and parent members, there are two ways that a higher education professional can post. First, that member can contact the forum administrator and present independently verifiable information as to personal identity and school; that individual can then receive “College Rep” status, which indicates that College Confidential has taken reasonable steps to verify the individual is from the claimed school. The school must be identified publicly, although the individual’s personal info will not be disclosed. Second, if an individual prefers to remain anonymous, he or she will refrain from making claims (even if true) as to current or former position. E.g., “I am (or was) an admissions officer at a selective liberal arts college” would not be permitted. Such members will still develop a reputation for expertise, of course, if their body of posts demonstrates their knowledge. College Confidential members are advised NOT to publicly question the credentials of a new member claiming a university affiliation. Rather, they should call the post to the attention of the moderators or the administrator so that Website policy may be explained and any necessary verification take place.

Mostly from personal experience: going through the process with our own kids, watching friends’ kids go through it, and (for some posters) advising other students formally or informally. Many of us have gained experience by following admissions results on this forum over many years and seeing which patterns hold up. Some may work or have worked in admissions or read applications themselves (but as noted above, forum rules prohibit them from making that claim).

Ok, that is good. Plenty of schools actually require 2 years so I was concerned.

I think, like others, your list is ambitious given your grades and ECs and you likely will be TO. It seems unlikely your scores will go up enough to be reporting at pretty much any of those schools and plenty have most of the students reporting (or in MIT case required).

That said, I think there are plenty on that list you can get into..

One quick thing, you can’t report Girl Scouts from 8th grade on college apps.. that is pre-HS:)

Hopefully mom will get with you to fill out some NPCs soon.

I do think you are overstating admissions chances at all schools but I wish you the best of luck and yes, I think a Union interview is a great opportunity for you.

Good luck.

Okay, turns out her income is around 80 thousand? I found out while reviewing my QuestBridge application, which is due today. I still feel like this won’t change much, though..

p.s. I unfortunately didn’t make it off the waitlist but I’m glad that I was considered for their fly-in program.

Yeah I think I added Girl Scouts by mistake, thanks for reminding me. Also, I agree with the outcome of my scores not being so high–especially the one I will see in a few days–so I see why it is best to be more realistic about the schools on my list.

Good luck with QB. You know about the income guidance there though not a hard #.

You still need to know what you can pay. If it’s $20k or less, you will need an instate public (the $20k can cover living if you can get free income) or you may need to live hole or even go to a CC. Nothing wrong with that.

But if you want to study engineering you need to formalize a tutoring or study plan now to learn the math basics you struggled with. Or sadly you will need to find another major.

You still have a chance if one of the admits ends up declining the invitation.
